I have been considering changing my puppy's diet to raw. She currently has a very nice coat and looks good overall (I prefer dogs more on the lean side).

She has been on Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream. However, she's not much of an eater - and its not because I spoiled her. She gets the food on her bowl, has about five minutes to decide if she want to eat and then I take it from her. I present the bowl several times a day but for the most part she sniffs at it and turns away, sometimes going two or three days without nothing to eat. She does graze a lot on our lawn.

Thus the raw diet idea.

She is a 10 1/2 month old king charles cavalier. How should I make the transition (which food do you introduce first)? Can anyone give me an example of a small dog diet?

Vet is no help, I've asked him about it and he thought I was crazy.

Two things shout out from your statements.
One is the choice of food - some dogs just don'r like fish so have you tried a meat variety?

Don't keep offering the bowl -twice a day is fine. Put it down and walk away -take it up after ten minutes.

What is she finding on the lawn? Have you got her on treament for slug borne diseases?

I have a Patterdale terrier bitch who is fed raw, I used the sticky at the top of the page to get started. If I remember correctly, she had chicken for a few weeks to start off. Like your dog, she wasn't a big eater but now sits and squeaks for her meals :) My vet thinks I'm nuts too btw

I should've mentioned I've tried other varieties of TOTW (actually I think I tried them all) and this was the only one she even considers eating. I offer the bowl once when we both wake up, after the walk again, and then at night. She goes with me to school and work so she gets plenty of exercise (not a matter of not eating because she isn't moving).

We had her treated for internal parasites and even treated for giardia twice (first time without a test, second we tested).

Thank you threeponies, I was trying to avoid reading all 45 pages of that sticky, but I guess I'll take a look at it!

I feed my cocker spaniel puppy a raw diet - personally i love it and so does he!!

I find it a really easy way of feeding. He has a variation of different meats.
I feed him the natures instinct -http://www.naturalinstinct.com/categories/All-Dog-Food/
so it balances it with the nutrition etc. (id avoid tripe why puppy is little as is very rich!!)
He also has raw chicken wings which takes him a while to eat so good entertainment.
He went through a period of time too when he wasnt fussed about his food and i did the same offered it at breakfast, lunch, dinner for 10 minutes then removed the bowl...(worked out it was where i was doing alot of training with food rewards so he just wasnt hungry for his dinner) i varied using food and toys as a reward and he soon started eating his meals again!!
I also added some veg to his bowl - raw carrots etc to make it more exciting and inviting.

Good luck with your pup :-) x

Start with chicken- feed only this for a week, add tripe, then slowly add other meats in checking for poop issues, some are intolerant to lamb others pork yadda yadda
feed approx 2-3% of ideal ADULT weight per day
feed approx 80:10:10 meat:bone: offal (may have to adjust 10% is a bit too much offal for mine (runny tum)- and he probably gets more than 10% bone).

WEIGH food- very easy to over feed to begin with. Feed variety once established
DO read all 45 pages- knowledge is a good thing :)

Thats about the long and the short of it.

I think the main thing is keep it simple to start with and don't be in too much of a hurry to add new things. Try not to get too bogged down with the % of bone and offal. Just work out what suits you and the dog. I personally like the research and learning but it doesn't have to become an evangelical passion!! You might want to enquire if there is a local vet that isn't totally anti raw (they are out there!). Hope you give it a try and the dog enjoys your efforts.
