Why do people not think about what they are feeding their dogs??

I hate it when people say "well he's always been fed on bakers and look how good he looks"

I don't care how damn good he looks.

My child would look ok if i fed it a limited amount of soda and bread and candy but it doesn't mean its good for it.

AHhhhhh

I don't think everyone should feed raw it doesn't work for everyone but at least stop being so ignorant and feed your dog something that is good for it.

Its either give your money to food companies or to the vet later. I know which i would rather do!

Rant over.

Chocolate and lemsip for everyone (sorry i'm ill and its all i have)

We used to feed a brand called Favour which

I am so glad there is more awareness around now....

Like I said on another thread, we had a huge debate about it at club the other day, was very interesting to hear everyone's views. Almost everyone is on AG and those who aren't feed raw or DUCK. Apart from me who has to feed low protein mulch because it is the only think that keeps him stable!!!

My grandparents sometimes buy that! It is bizarre stuff, like horse/chicken food. Blergh. Never read the "ingredients" but I can imagine what is and isnt in it.

This is true, but if the child was only fed fizzy drink, bread and sweets and nothing else then that child certainly would end up with health and behavioural problems.

I'm turning in to you KatieLou - I always seem to have to justify my raw fed dogs to commerical fed dog owners, and it always turns in to a big rant. Not sure why I have to justify feeding raw - no one ever asks commercial feeders to justify there choice :)

(That should be a grin, but I only know how to do smiles :))

Blazing Saddles, a lot of dogs do, too!!! Some brands of feed are like canine rocket fuel. And I have to agree with KarynK, carnivores should not get diabetes (which mine may end up having, depending on the results of tests :()

I don't feel i need to justify it at all.

And i don't think its for everyone i am fine with that.

But for people to be ignorant to what is in some kibble is stupid.

And you don't think dogs do??

I have been doing a lot of research on it and do you not wonder why the rate of diabetes and liver and kidney disease is so high in dogs?

There are a lot of dogs falling prey to liver disorders at the moment, some far too close to home.

Types of JRD and pancreatis is also common in some breeds as well and the connections are starting to be made (although I think the former has to be carried by a parent)

Nope.

I wonder about getting the mortgage paid, my families health, having a happy child, what I'm going to cook for dinner tonight. The incidences of kidney, liver problems and diabetes in dogs comes way down on the list of my major concerns.

Glad your on the case though.

Thats great for you but seeing as my dogs are my children and my life pretty much revolves around my husband and them i care about what i am putting in their bodies.

Shhhh BS, we don't have kids and live vicariously though our pets, can't you tell?? :p

Our dogs appear to be dying younger, from complaints they shouldn't even be having, and if there are people who are determined to find out why, then I am all for it and I (absolutely genuinely, not being sarky) hope you don't have to go through with your dog some of the things I have seen other people go through.

It is very hard not to get attached to dogs and equally hard to rack up deaths to be 'just one of those things' - if it can be prevented, then I am glad people are kicking up a stink.

See I very much like the idea of Raw but I also strongly feel it is not right for Jack.

I did my research and although I'm aware that what I feed him is not the best feed, it's the best for him. He's the happiest and looking as healthy as ever, finally staying a healthy weight instead of yo-yo dieting and having to hugely reduce his diet in order to keep him from becoming obese. He's very prone to weight gain and the 'better' dried food cause him to pile on the pounds unless he's fed a very small amount of the feed, which leads to a hungry, unhappy dog.

I did my research and I except (having spoken to a few professionals to re-assure myself) that this is the lesser of two evils.

With my next dog, if I get a different breed, I will feed something else.

I'm a pratt, when you mentioned DUCK on another thread I thought you meant the actual bird, and wondered how anyone could afford to feed it. Now realise it is a feed, have googled and it looks interesting. Not got as far as price yet, suspect might be a bit more than Skinners.:(

Sorry if I've offended, your intentions are good KLH. Perhaps some links to information regarding your concerns, that I could peruse, would be useful.

Also, dinner is cooked, eaten and OH is washing up, he's the best trained out them all! So,i can reeeeeeeelaxxxxxxxxxxx!

I have to say every brittany i have met has had super sensitive tummies and gains weight by just looking at food. So raw works well for them.

I had the opposite issue with Stella. I switched her to Scooter Food shortly after we got Prince but she lost too much weight. Now back on raw venison, her muscles have returned, she's packed on a couple of pounds and her coat is glossier than ever.

For now I'm keeping Prince on Scooter food (either salmon and vegetable flavour or tofu and lentil) as it keeps the wee podge looking nice and trim.

My friends and family regard me as a health fanatic, so it only makes sense that my dogs are on raw/homecooked, with tripe, spinach, blueberries or sheep yoghurt for snacks. (Of course the little beggars try and supplement their diet with bits of bread and hotdogs from the filthy NYC street :D)

I truly believe with knowledge of what you are feeding and why raw can be used to fix most weight/ muscle issues
