I moved to a new area last year and have had my mare on grass livery, the fields were a bog all winter and the horses were very miserable. We were promised more grazing which hasn't materialised but this area is also clay and just doesn't seem suited to being in use 24/7. No option to strip graze and horses are usually left until the grass is gone before being moved to a lusher field which I'm not keen on.
Space has come up at neighbouring yard they have more grazing but horses come in October-March same facilities at each. Can have own field van graze as you wish or buddy up.
Horse isn't adverse to being stabled but prefers to be out however was miserable last year in the thick of winter. Where would you choose? TIA

My land is clay and while I would love to keep my horses out all year on clay you reach a point where the surface is just liquid, especially in well used areas. My fields can at times have areas which are knee deep and I will not go in unless totally needed. The horses could come down with mud fever and it's impossible to spot cuts etc and as for the likely hood of foot abscesses......... Also at times you can see the animals are not happy and unless there is somewhere they can stand out of the mud it's pretty horrid.
That's why I stable overnight. My horses are much happier, although I keep the time in to a minimum

I would move.

Agree with everyone who has posted so far: provided the second yard offers turnout during the day, I'd be moving.

My land is clay too and when the weather is bad the field turns into a bog. Not only would the be field be unusable the rest of the year if I put them out on it, but the horses just stand at the gate looking thoroughly miserable! I hate having them in but they are miserable out in bad weather - thoroughly spoilt horses! As long as they can stretch their legs, have a roll and a fart in the school, they are more than happy to eat hay and stay dry!
