Apologies, there have been a few lately but it’s in the back of my mind I need to decide before I go crazy.

I’ve listed the basic pros and cons with a small explanation. Yard 1 is current Yard 2 is a possibility.

Journey by car
Yard 1) Home :15mins 5.5miles
Yard 2) Home: 15mins 6.3miles
Yard 1) Work: 25mins 11miles
Yard 2) Work: 5mins 1.8miles

Yard 1 is easy to walk to in heavy snow. I have a 4x4 now though.

Horsebox/trailer parking
Yard 1) No
Yard 2) Yes

I’ve just posted about this on another thread. I’d like to get out an about a bit more now as my guy really thrives off going new places and variation.

Turn out
Yard 1) Own paddock without company
Yard 2) Small field with company

My horse is an EMs laminitic. He can be turned out with a muzzle or happy to be on his own in a smaller paddock. Hes also happy to have a day in the stable here and there. I worry for his mental health though being unable to socialise with others being on his own. Fields get changed constantly at yard 1 so he can go 2 months without having equine company next to him. They are in fields around his and I take him to ‘visit’ friends. Yard 2 would be a larger field but it’s grazed 11 months of the year so not constantly fresh and rested.

Hay
Yard 1) Own but incorrect order. Pay more?
Yard 2) Own?

yard 1 has a specific hay supplier who delivers every 2 weeks in winter and every 2 months in summer. I have requested specific Timothy hay but twice now had a few wrong bales in the batch. I buy small bales to ensure this so pay more. Summer time most are living out so can be tricky to source hay.

Hacking
Yard 1 ) Great but public area with lots of uncontrollable dogs
yard 2) Not as good but can box out

Yard 1 has miles of hacking. We are in a very public area though and have had incidents of uncontrollable dogs attacking horses. Warm summer evenings tend to be an attraction for teenagers wanting to drink. Yard 2 has a few fields for hacking and a small stretch of 50yards on a A road to get elsewhere. Forest tracks 10-40mins drive away.

Arena
Yard 1)Good. Hardly in use. Doesn’t get narrowed though but new.

yard 2) Good but lots of teaching. Yo is ex-international eventer and holds lots of lessons and training.

my guy is 18 next year so not needing the arena as much maybe 1-2 times per week.

Owners
Yard 1) Lovely but inexperienced, unknowledgable, happy for everyone to do their own thing.
Yard 2) Nice, old school and experienced. Won’t stand for rubbish care/not visiting.

Services
Yard 1) Only 6 months of year. Freelancer comes in to cover winter help.
Yard 2). All year round- one worker employed all year round. Offer of full and working livery if required.

Turn out
Yard 1)Self. Unless paying freelancer
Yard 2) included in livery- 7 days, Bring in 5 days

I did have prices but they’re by-the-by . Yard 2 possible works in a better deal as to and bring in are included.

yard 1 also has a neglect case at the moment which isn’t being dealt with. Yo say ‘see how it goes’. Horse is emaciated and has had rspca called a few times. Also another one being kept in a stable 24/7 for almost a year. I have turned a blind eye for most as it’s not my business but there comes a point when you can’t let it go on any longer. I do like the yard believe it or not! However the trailer space and my guy being on his own is throwing it for me.
Yard 2 is nice, however overly competitive. This may have changed though as it was pony club mums and kids years ago.

sorry for the total script and on an iPhone so spelling may all over the place. I would appreciate thoughts xx

from what you've said yard 1 would be driving me a bit nuts and it sounds like it is not working for you.

Competitive and PC mums I would just let wash over me, in your shoes. and I'd enjoy not having to stress about rubbish care or what happens if you can't make it there. Yard 2 sound pretty OK, if you won't be using the arena much are you sure the hacking will suit you? Though does sound better than wild dogs and drunk teenagers anyway! o_O

Thank you. Yes it’s got a bit out of hand with the dogs- my friend and I have hat cams now but it’s not worth it if one was to bite a leg.

Yard two. With a veteran horse you can easily brush off any overly competitive pressure so as long as you can make the hacking work and can get in the arena occasionally I would move. The neglect case and horse stuck in 24/7 would do my head in. I'd rather tackle 50 yards of A-Road than drunk teenagers and out of control dogs I think. Plus the field situation sounds daft.

yard 2 as i wouldnt want a horse isolated from others and the neglect case would really upset me so i would move and call WHW or BHS welfare to make sure the poor thing was looked after, the RSPCA are a bit useless where horses are concerned IMO as is proved by nothing being done so far... i would rather hack a short way on a road and not have to deal with yobs and dogs....

You’d think, but that’s where the breakdown occurs. Likewise with the neglect case. It’s a shame as I knew the horse before and he was a lovely type, he’s just a figment of his former self now.
