YES they can search your car WITHOUT any warrant.
And a stop search DOES not require a specific reason..... if you demand one....the anti terror legislation is more than enough reason!!
Any marker on the car or driver is also enough reason!

i was stopped one Boxing Day evening, after taking my Nan and Pap home ... i was wearing my PJ's

and was stopped by Plod asked to get out of the vehicle was asked what, if anything was in the boot..i replied "a carpet"!!!

had everything checked, was "bagged" and asked to produce on the following day.....

Don't you have 7 days for a producer? I got one when I was pulled over (my own fault, and I got points for it) and hadn't got my full licence with me. Had either 7 or 14 days to produce it at the police station.

this was in 1983.................. didnt question it, did as i was asked.....nobody bothered about "i have my rights" crap back then....
 
Well, I have to say that the police DO harass people. I've been the victim of this myself, when I was young. The trouble was that my parents gave me a nice car as a present. I wasn't working at the time (well, only part time).
Some local lout slashed my tyres, I reported it, police decided I shouldn't have my car, must be a drug dealer, and constantly stopped me (full siren sh1t) and searched my car.
Then they told me 'Don't let us catch you driving around on your own again' when they had stopped me on the way to do my horse at night!
They also came to my house at night, and drove me around our village/local town in their car...although to this day, I don't quite know why, or what it was supposed to achieve.
I've never had so much as a point on my license incidentally...or a speeding ticket.
I sold the car, and moved away from the area...which stopped the harassment.

Dont think I will even start, which I'm sure everyone will be pleased about, apart from a little saying which always comes to mind which is "Just because your paranoid, doesn't mean to say their not out to get you", seems quite relevant in this instance.

Nothing is impossible with sufficient determination. It would be impossible for the Police to influence an insurance marker, obviously it would be possible to put any other marker on, but there is a data trail for every marker on the Police National computer, so that would be easily detected and pretty daft. The officer would have also had to go to the trouble of identifying the car owned or driven by the carless horserider (again do-able but trackable)

Moving away wouldn't stop the problems the OP would seem to be suffering from as she's been stopped by a force that isn't her local one now too. How does a force just happen to know your car has a marker on it? Surely they have to run a check on your number plate first to realise that? To feel the car warrants having it's plates checked upon there must be something "suss" about the car or the way it's being driven to alert Police attention to it?

As a member of a different oft villified profession I do wish that the "awkward squad" pratts of any profession would give up, as all they do is reflrct badly on the rest of their profession. If I was the OP I would be writing a complaint to the local police, with dates and times and asking for a full explanation, including the info held on the data bases they have as marked for my car.

Dont remember the original posting mentioning the horse rider was "careless", I thought it was to do with the police car speeding and not driving with due care and attention near a horse on the road, then leaving the blue lights on after being asked to switch off cause of upsetting the animal on a road, or did I miss something ?
 
And despite what most people seem to think, I for one do believe the Police have better things to do than create vendettas against someone they stopped for riding their horse on the road... I had a friend who was stopped a lot many years ago (before I knew her) and it was because he OH (at the time) was dodgy and known to the Police to be involved in all sorts of things. Not suggesting this is the case here but there was more of a reason to that.

Think this incident can just be put down to misfortune and coincidence, though. Just shows you what one bad experience with the police can lead to - lots of mistrust and suspicion. It's just a shame that one petty jobsworth can do all this!

There was nothing 'suss' about my car - up to date insurance, tax, and at that point it was only about a year old. I've never had a point on my license, nor been fined (or whatever they do) for speeding. I've no police record either.

It's mighty strange, almost beyond comprehension, for two forces to both decide to pull the OP's car randomly within a week as well as stop the same person on their horse as well.
 
There was nothing suspect about my car either, all papers in order, seriously well maintained, clean (not horsey at that time lol), just the 3 points the narky policeman had given me for speeding. But I got stopped all over the country, or else "wound up" by the police in Surrey, to the point I became absolutely paranoid about it.

I am not crediting the police with enough technological gadgetry here! I assumed they had to manually enter a registration number of a car they felt needed checking out, for whatever reason.

That's the bit I couldn't understand. Couldn't fathom why two officers from separate forces both decided to run her plates.

Now I understand the patrol cars have cameras that automatically scan plates. Thanks.

I am a bloody hard working one that mixes my time between rural Policing & working within the Collision Investigation dept (dealing with fatal and serious collisions).

Yes, the Police can stop any vehicle at any time in order to check documents - it is actually an offence not to produce them at the time, however, we give out a form allowing a driver 7 days to produce which ever documents required.

no, I have never given one out to a horse rider - rather a dim thing to be done, but there are some dim Officers about.

Yes, a vehicle can be searched without a warrant - someones been watching too much of the Bill.

If an insurance marker is on a vehicle, that could mean any one of a number of things - it has no insurance, the vehicle has recently been purchased and the system has not been updated from the insurers database or even that the insurance is under a trade or company policy and therefore also comes up as no insurance.

It is unfortunate that our Government has got us into this state but the majority of us are monkeys, not organ grinders.

My duties consist of dealing with your loved ones who have died suddenly (we have to strip and check dead bodies), dealing with mutilated bodies form fatal collisions, we have to be social workers, teachers, nurses and above all we are HUMAN so please stop treating us as something scraped off your shoe.

I have been spat on, beaten up by a drink driver, bitten by a person who then said they had aids and many other unpleasant things that a lot of you will never have to experience but yes, my job also includes dealing with speeding motorists - answer is don't speed.

Now I have finished my rant I will vow never to read any more Police posts!!!

I have the utmost respect for the police force.

Living in the country it's great having the rapport we get with the local police as they meander about in their 4x4. We can even call ours direct to their police radio, by entering their badge number as an extension number when calling.

To me the police force isn't a faceless "bunch of bobbies" and we're not "faceless members of the public" to our local officers either.

Seems alot of people have lost respect for the often distressing and thankless work most members of the police force have to do.

I wanted to be a police officer when I was alot younger. Wouldn't do it now, simply because it's such a hard job with the way the public now treat you.

Hat's off to you and all other officers.

Shilasdair - The point is I have listened (or read, in this case) enough for me to want to say my piece. I have never once said I was wonderful but unfortunately the image "we" have is one of not getting off our arses and only booking motorists. There is actually more to it. I am not making excuses for the idiots in the various Forces but perhaps there are people out there who do not actually realise what a large proportion of our job entails.
 
This thread is not actually a police bashing post in general, it is about the experience of one person, this week with one force. Most posters have not had a pop about police only doing speeding motorists. The good police officers get tarred with the same brush as these idiots who have caused problems for the OP.

sorry to upset you irishdraught it was not intended.
i have the up most respect for police i will admit that when i was stopped on jack on monday i did fight my corner (politely) as i thought what they were stopping me for was silly.
I've found lately that my force north wales has really gone down hill, when OH's car was stolen from the house (house broken in for keys) in November it took them an hour to arrive and then when CID came round the next day i was questioned to why i wasn't working ( i was 6 months pregnant and on maternity) then when i found a strange man in the yard 2 weeks after the car going it took 4 hours for them to come round ( i was told that they were dealing with a suicidal person) if you google the chief constables name ( Richard Brunstrom) you'll know where merlod cymraeg and myself are coming from the man is crazy !!
and as merlod cymraeg is probably well aware there's been load of cars being stopped by police lately in our area old people being told they didn't have there seat belts on when they did and so on.
But i'm so impressed with how good the greater manchester police were. i just feel sorry for north wales officers they have targets and its close to the end of the financial year.
 
Well said irishdraught - the police don't appear to be popular at the moment do they? Sadly there are people who join the police force because they like authority and abuse it, however there are a great deal of excellent officers out there doing a job no one else wants to do.

OP - I've been to North Wales four times and stopped by teh police there 6 times. Each time they searched the vehicle and sent me on my way - I think they must get bored of doing people for speeding and want to irritate them in other ways
