My BC is just over 9 months old. She has not had a season yet, and while at the vets last week they suggested it would be a good time to get her spayed giving the various reasons.
They checked her over to make sure she is not coming into season, which she is not.

Whoever i speak to gives a different point of view, and of course views will always differ.
But i would really appreciate other fors and againsts, ie spaying before or after first season.
I suppose apart from the mammary cancer reasons given by the vets, my main reason is that i DEFINITELY do not want any puppies and do not want to run any risk of this. There are quite a few entire dogs round here!
thanks for help : )

You will get many different opinions for different people reason being is their is no good research to prove either way is best.

If you know you can keep your dog 100% safe from pregnancy then wait until after her first season.

If you can't go head and get it done now.

In large breeds, waiting till they have physically mature is best, so ideally 14 months to allow the growth plates to close, however IMO in small to medium breeds such as your own then I have to agree with your vet, now is spot on, she is or near enough fully grown and the less seasons they have the less chance of them getting mammary cancers when they mature.

I wanted to get B done before her first season but OH didnt want her done at all so we compromised and decided to see how messy she was first.

She was horrendous.... blood everywhere (thank god :p) So she will be off to be done when the 3 months is up.

I would get her done now... the mess and constant worry that a dog could jump in and 'say hello' really got to me!

Our new pup came into season the day before we got her. Typical I thought but in 1 way at least we know she needs doing. I was tempted to say hold her til the bleeding is over but couldnt wait. Yes she is "spotting" everywhere and yes it is annoying, I have surprised myself with how I am coping actually, but the real worry apparently is after the bleeding as then she will want the dogs and do anything to get at them :(

We are waiting until 3 months after her season so as everything is back to normal size etc and less complications......however had we known she had not been done I would have had her spayed before.

Helpful? Not I think haha - just yet another opinion.

When a bitch has it`s first season her "lady bits" grow and mature to how they should be;wait three months and then spay if you want to.Spaying before a first season means that the lady bits remain in a puppy state, this results very often in urine scald;also those spayed too young are much more prone to leaking urine in middle age and beyond. There is treatment for that, but it will be life long..so best to avoiud it if you can .

Thanks for all replies.
She is booked in for op on thursday so i have until wednesday to totally decide it think.
I cannot 100% guarantee she would not have 'male visitors', and as per a previous thread she is going through her teenage time atm and is being a bu**er of lead, ie running off at random, so this too is a worry...

She is a small collie, welsh, so not a big dog...

Thanks again

Don't let her off whilst she's in season then or take her somewhere you know there isn't going to be anyone else. It's not a worry then.

I'd wait until she's had her 1st season, you know then she's fully matured.
