Just a selection of images taken this morning of Rage's back..... ''Spectacular' was the unanimous opinion of every vet in the building.

Scary to think you have no idea 'what lies beneath' the exterior, Rage when we got home looking fab, as ever.

This is a horse that has merely presented with a very mild, intermittent hindlimb lameness and a couple of tiny niggles which we passed off as schooling issues. No bucking, rearing, bolting, refusing...... what a SAINT.

Holy sh*t, that is one scary xray.
I can't believe she hasn't reacted more!
Is this something she was born with do you think?

I couldn't believe it when I saw it - a mixture of disbelief and 'I think I am going to be sick'

Not sure how long it has been there, vet reckons from the X-rays that it is at least 5 years (we bought him 2years ago and he flew a 5* vetting then). He is 10 now.

S_F and AmyMay -
Diagnosis was 'Kissing Spines', though a couple of processes appear to be totally ossified. The 'mouse nibbled' areas are ulcerations from where they have been impinging on each other.
He will have surgery, prognosis is good.

Poor lad, presumably he's looking at retirement now?
Is something that extensive operable, I'd be surprised if it was.
And saint is certainly one way of describing him!

oh gosh. Poor horse. Don't some horses put up with a lot. I have never seen x-rays of kissing spine or this. Glad to hear the prognosis is good. Lovely horse. I love his face and what a kind eye. Good luck to you both.

Ouch

I know its easy for me to say but try not to be too down - kissing spine is not the end - a horse at our yard was operated on and is now coming back into work as an eventer (I know he isn't actually competing yet, but he is doing everything according to plan so far!)

Poor Rage, but at least you can do something about it for him now

Lots of hugs for you AND for Rage

Sorry Acolyte, missed your post before

The prognosis is good, so I'm not too worried about that. It's just that one amount of surgery and the 3month boxrest/lunging seems so daunting, let alone having to do it all over again if he requires a second lot of surgery
crazy.gif
But, will wait and see what the specialist says I suppose before I go overboard.
Do you know anything else locally that is box resting? Having him boxresting on his own is going to be a major pain in the a55!

Boo is much the same as last night, but not lame (though I think that is the bute more than anything!). I decided not to take her today, so will continue cold hosing/bandaging/buting for a few days to see how she goes, and then scan if things aren't improving.
Thanks for asking - I have my 'rational' head back on now!

Absolutely amazing ... now tell me how did they get the drawing pins in the xray .... I know how they do it for feet but not sure about the technique for spines

Sorry, nothing at our yard on box rest as far as I am aware - will text a friend to make sure!

All I can say is the horse that went through it at our yard is not the quietest in the world, but he seemed to cope with it OK - but then there was always plenty going on for him to look at etc. Could you move him to another yard just for the box rest bit maybe??

I was toying with the idea, but as he has to be worked twice a day right from the outset it would be difficult to fit it all in, especially as I hope to be working full time shortly

I think I will change Boo and Fia onto a 'in during the day, out at night' regime, and keep Tills and Pancake on their current regime for as long as poss, that way he will have company for as many hours of the day as possible.

Keep us updated! It is really interesting to see the xrays. So many people have had a lot of success with the op so i hope it goes well for him. Good luck!

Glad you found them interesting - I wasn't sure whether to post them or not (thought I would get lots of abusive PMs for being such an awful mother!

) but they had t be seen to be believed, and hopefully this will be the first and last time I come across xrays like these....
Hopefully I will have some new improved xrays after he has gotten though surgery

Thanks for the luck!

Poor Pony we were diagnosed recently but nothing like as bad (only 2 vertebrae involved) but similar presentation intermittent bilateral lameness in front and loss of performance but no behaviour issues. May I suggest a name change Rage doesn't seem very appropriate considering how chilled he seems and that he'd have every right to be going crazy 24/7!

LOL!
He is actually Outrageous, but the 'Rage' bit of it has always seemed the most ironic as he has always been such a chilled, obliging chap
smirk.gif
His last owners called him Rage as well

Happy Horse - he will have surgery to correct as much as possible, and any remaining impingements will be medicated with steroids for the time being, and then we will look at a second op if necessary I think. Waiting for confirmation of the 'plan' from a specialist at the moment.

That is one very familiar xray. My horse was diagnosed with KS last May and had the op. She is now back to being ridden and is coming along in leaps and bounds. I can honestly say that I've never felt my horse feel so good in her movement. Although still not perfect as she's been holding herself together for that long that she is now a bit like bambi and sometimes her legs get a bit lost as to what they're meant to be doing. But we're having such fun together. I hope everything works out for you both and that if you go down the surgery route just to let you know that there's positive light at the end of the tunnel.

I just can't wait to see what kind of a horse he is when his back does work properly! Despite all of this he has still been getting 7s for his paces when competing, and not a single person that watches him work doesn't fall head over heels with his movement and attitude. He'll be the next Mr President when he comes back into work!

Glad to hear you and Honey(?) are getting along so well now
