"James John Gray (aged 45) has been sentenced to 24 weeks in prison and banned from keeping equines for life. He has also been ordered to pay £400,000 in costs.
James Gray Junior (16) has been given an 18-month supervision order and has been banned from keeping equines for 10 years. He cannot appeal this ban for five years."
The main thing I was interested in is the lifetime ban, I am sure he will be closely monitored. Hopefully we will not see the sort of scenes that were present at Spindles Farm again.
Use the link to the RSPCA website placed further up. I Can't see it on the News Websites yet.
I'm delighted about the ban, but also the amount that he has to repay.
Is it safe to assume that he will most likely have to sell the Farm to pay these costs?
Why only a ban from keeping equines? Surely, if they are capable of such terrible abuse of any animal then they should be banned from keeping ALL animals for life??
24 weeks isn't good enough IMO, not for probably THE worst case of horse cruelty in the UK. And as for £400,000 in costs - sorry but yes it sounds like a lot but I bet it cost the charities way more than this to deal with the rescue operation and rehab and rehome so many horses.

Ditto that! Am sat at my desk feeling extremely emotional at the moment.
I know there will be people who say that the sentence is not enough etc. which I agree with. But unfortunately it's the maximum sentence that is allowed to be given in these circumstances so ultimatelythe best result we could hope for.
If Judge had passed sentence of ban in respect of all animals, it would have been open to immediate appeal. Also, the average costs order in these cases is in the region of £5000 so £400,000 is a brilliant result. Both sides would have been requested to file costs schedules to set out both legal fees and ancillary costs.
24 weeks is the most the DJ could order without committing the matter up for sentence to the Crown Court and with the pressure on crown court judges not to use custody as form of punishment if any other sentence would suffice, its likely he would have got suspended sentence order in Crown at worst.
I guess all Patty's terribly helpful evidence will go to waste as they patently have not appealled against conviction.........
Brilliant news!! but I wonder if the sly b*ggar has changed the name of his farm because it's now in someone else's name and can't be sold to pay the costs?
Yes it is really - Perhaps as a result of this case, maximum sentences will be reviewed?....Or perhaps not.
I shouldn't think he'll serve the full time will he?
I'm sure some of those "nice boys" in prison will make him feel WELCOME !! He will come out walking a different way, if you get my meaning. NOW, that will be punishment. LOL
As some you know because of the James Gray Case we launched a petition to licence equine traders and dealers. A guilty verdict alone is proof enough for us that a licence scheme must now be put in place. It is beyond shameful that our governing bodies allow dealers like the Grays to operate un-checked and until this is addressed the guilty verdict will be shared by those who continue to fail to protect equines.
