Hi all,
I have a 9 week old English springer puppy and he has the squits i told my vet and they gave me some pro-kolin to give him and to keep him on dry food hes very allert and hyper so no change in his mood.
When i first got him he was on chuddlys but i gradually changed him over to pedigree he has a bit of dry food and some wet food 3 times a day. I fed my GSD on pedegree when they were puppys and they were fine on it, do you think its not agreeing with him thats why he has the squits he has had the squits nearly coming up to 2 weeks now! What would be the best food to feed springers? This is the first time owning a Springer i have allways has GSD. Oh and hes going to be a working Dog!
Thanks in advance sorry its soo long its easyier to say it then to type it!!

Try him on something like Skinners Duck and Rice. Also you might try raw, some dogs can't tolerate grain at all.

I've always had GSDs too and I don't really hold Pedigree in high esteem :o sorry!

Definitely get him off pedigree, even if his tummy cope with it his brain won't, you'll have one mental springer!
In the mean time I would boil up some rice and chicken and feed him little and often whilst continuing with the pro kaolin. Once his tummy clears up you need to very gradually introduce something like skinners duck and rice, but you might find he cant tolerate dry food. Mine is fed on Acana which is all he tolerates, but if I had a freezer he'd be on raw.

As others have said, get him onto something hypo allergenic, there are lots around, James Wellbeloved is one I've used

You could try him on a dessert spoon (seeing as he's a puppy) of Yeo Valley Natural pro biotic yoghurt, someone suggested it to me when my ESS was ill with squits few months ago, she was right as rain in a few hours of eating it. I gave her some for a few days. I also gave her boiled rice and chicken for a few days while she was sensitive.

I would 2nd the chicken and rice fed little and often and once his setteled again I would put him back on the chuddlys,

I've got 2 springers one is a working dog but they are fed chappie dry dog food, When they were 10 weeks old I was still feeding scrambled eggs, pilchards and weetabix.

Thank you everyone for replying its been great help!

Im going to go to Tesco's tonight and get some rice and chicken for him! I am very worrid about him having the squits! He has his 2nd enjection Monday and they wont let him have it done unless he is pooing hard poo!

How much chicken and rice should i feed him and how many times a day and for how log untill he starts pooing solid? Would Jamed wellbeloved be ok for him to go on when hes better? If so do i just feed him dry food or wet too?

Sorry for all the questions im very very worrid!!

Give him the chicken and rice for a couple of days and see how he is. If he's more
solid then add a little JWB to each meal until he's on it completely.

He should be on 3 meals a day at his age.

Agreed, just seen how young he is also (number blindness!!!), chopping and changing his food at that age will be upsetting for his tummy, keep it simple, little and often when they are still babies.

TBH, I would keep him on whatever the breeder had him on. Stick him on chicken and rice or a mix of rice and his original food. The food bag has a feeding guide on it re how much to give normally. I would feed that weight but mostly rice for one day to help him recover then gradually introduce the pedigree again, a handful at a time, per meal. If he's still loose, then I'd be off to the vets in a hurry to ask what to do next. Leave off the wet food completely. He'll drink enough if he's on dried food without needing wet food. Is he food motivated? I don't see the need for wet food unless you need to tempt him to eat.

I have two Springer puppies and I tried to get them off Pedigree puppy biscuit as I prefer a higher protein food for growing pups but I tried to change too quickly and had double squits for two days-such fun! I've had no issues since I put them back on the original food and the vet advised that I leave them on it for a couple of months. Now that they're 4.5 months, they can tolerate different dried so I'm slowly swapping them onto our preferred brand, currently half and half of both brands.

PS: fairly outrageous not to post pics! Hope he's better soon, another spangle to drool over!

JWB is good but if you get the skinner its essentially the same but half the price.

I would not reintroduce the pedigree after the chicken and rice. I would keep him on chicken and rice for at least a week and then slowly introduce the new food.

Aawww - sending vibes to your puppy! I have a 10 month old springer - she was kept on Chudley's puppy as that was what the breeder had her on. She seemed fine so it was a case of - if it ain't broke, don't fix it! She is still on Chudley's now but on the Junior.
You must get some piccies on here though:D
Open a (free) account on photobucket.com - upload your piccies, then copy and paste the last code under your uploaded photo into the reply box! Give it a go:D

I hope this works!

Mine are on half Pedigree (cos the breeder had them on it) and half Wagg puppy. They're fine on it after lots of experimenting with percentages of varying amounts of each. I think one of them is going to be sensitive and I spoke to OH last night about raw!
