I qualified today at a riding club show in a SSADL home produced Ridden Veteran class… am I right in thinking this means I have qualified for the London International Horse Show (Olympia) ?!

I got a qualification card to join the SSADL but it doesn’t state what I’ve qualified for, I have to tick and the only one that seems relevant is Senior Championships. Can anybody help?

I imagine that is a first round qualifier as you have to be a member to qualify LIHS and show your membership card. Well done on winning your class. The rule book is on line and sets out the different champs. You will have qualified for various finals at their show at Onley in September.

Ok thank you, I’ve been given 10 days to join and become a member in order for my qualification to count. So if you do well at the Senior Champs does that mean you will qualify for LIHS? If you can find a link to the show at Onley that would be fab! Thanks 😊

If you’ve got a first round qualification then there’s various second rounds at Onley. There’s plaited horses/ponies, M & M, foreign breeds and others. If you win a second round then you qualify or at some it’s the champion from the second round. We just missed it last year so will hopefully have another bash this time. I can’t link as on phone but I think the schedule is on their website.

Well done.

Unlikey to be a RIHS qualifer at a Riding Club the direct routes tend to be at county shows.

I expect it is a first round qualification that enables you to compete in a 2nd round which if you then take the championship qualifies you for RIHS.

When I was doing them a few years ago when the qualification was Olympia there were a few direct routes such as Royal Windsor then there were other smaller shows where you qualified for round 2.

For example I got a 2nd at Herts County and 6th which qualifed me to go through to the 2nd round which was at Royal Berkshire.

One year I came 2nd in round 2 at Royal Berkshire in Homey's age group and then all the first and seconds for the 6 classes competed against each other with the winner going to Olympia. It is massively competitive or certainly was a few years back when I was doing the classes especially as there is such a variety of horses and ponies in the classes. Must be very hard for judges to make a decision.

I’ve since found it was a first round qualifier for LIHS and the second round is at Onley in September. I’ve joined the SSADL and going to give it a go. He is my horse of a lifetime, if I could do it with any horse it would be him. He’s 24 and it’s nice to have found something else we can do that’s not too strenuous after many happy years hunting.

I would suggest coming off the M1 at jct 18 and turn right towards Rugby on the A428. Stay with it till you get signs for Dunchurch, B4429. Into Dunchurch, turn left on A45 towards Daventry. Dual carriageway as you come out of Dunchurch then under M45 bridge. Drive is on the left just after a right turn to Grandborough. It is a long drive but at least they have improved it now and in parts it is two vehicle width. When is the show?

Thanks Errin Paddywhack - that’s really helpful 😊

I think it will be the Sunday that I go too. What classes are you doing?

Do you have any idea how the show works timewise....I was looking at these two classes, but there are so many classes in between, it looks like it could be hours (& hours) to wait?
Last year it did go on a long time and there were very long waits. I had gone to bed well before the last qualifier finished at about 11.00. Not wanting to put you off at all but do go prepared to hang around.

Yikes...given that I am 3 hours+ away, and was planning on just going up for the day, that sounds like I might give it a miss.....it wouldn't be fair on my old boy to hang around that long!

Cab you book a day stable? I’m about 2 hours so not so bad.

Yes ....possibly.

I think I'll enter and then see how it pans out....other problem may be that I think I need a groom/helper, as I think they "strip" the ridden classes don't they?, and my groom (aka husband) isn't thrilled about hanging around having been used to specific times for eventing and dressage!

We must all meet up if we go?!

Humble pie - not too long now! do you know if there are any videos anywhere of the set show? Would be good to watch a few to make sure I’m learning it right!

Hi I am not sure there are - but they re-explain it in the ring so you can check. I haven't looked at the schedule recently but last year there was an evening championship. It is quite a complicated schedule isn't it?

And yes we should all meet up.

Yes I’m glad they explain it again in the ring. I’ve tried to practise today in the field but my boy was so excited and zooming around I barely had enough time to think where I was going 😂 yes it is - it says evening championship on the Saturday but day championship on the Sunday but then doesn’t state when and where that is (I would assume at the end) but senior of the year championship is after the class we are doing and we are doing that too… unless that’s what they mean and you have to do that if you qualify out of the classes? 🤔 not sure 🤷🏻‍♀️

I rang and asked, and I "think" that there is a mini championship after each section of 3 classes, eg after the three ages groups of the in-hand restricted, then another after the three age groups of the ridden restricted?....as the champion of each of those gets a LIHS ticket. .... but agree, the schedule is very unclear!

Hi yes that is right. Then there is an evening championship for some other classes, so yes if you did the first set of classes - think they are foreign breeds - and were 1st/2nd then you go to the mini championship, then the championship for the LIHS ticket is after the ridden for that section so you wouldn't have to stay all day. Had a look at the schedule over lunchtime.
