Stable Divider idea??

Just after some advice please, I would like to divide a 12ft x 28ft space in to two stables, but that could also be opened up in to one big space again for lambing. My thinking is to use a galvanised half mesh gate which could be opened up and pinned back for sheep, but also closed to allow two stables for the winter for 1 horse and 1 pony. Just wondering if anyone had any other suggestions or ideas? and whether my gate idea would be safe enough for the horses? (visions of crazy said pony getting a foot caught somewhere!!)

I used to be on a yard where the stables were made from gates in an open fronted barn. it worked fine - those gates were filled in with ply though and i think personally I'd prefer that to mesh. they had little mountings for the ply welded on. it works fine provided your horses get on because obviously they can reach over the gates. as you just want to make 2 stables you could put the feed etc at opposite ends so they don't become protective over their own rations.

Gate would be fine but I would cover it with sterling board or similar to prevent accidents.

I have a gate between mine, which is boarded with ply.

yes but I'd line the gates with sterling board. A friend has just open gates and her horses are always putting their feet through them, not in an accidental way but just general kicking gates for food etc. Not worth the risk if not lined.

Depends whats the walls are you are attaching too aswell...
Friend had large loddon type foaling boxes wood infill at bottom and bars at the top. To split them hubby made a simple wooden frame and covered on both sides with OSB. He left part of the pine wood frame extending from both sides at the top just a couple of inches and this was slotted in between the bars to secure it. Meant it could be lifted and slotted in anywhere to change the size of stables easily too.

Thank you! definitely think the idea of lining with board/ply will make me sleep better at night, thanks. I've never seen gates used before but the only way I can persuade the lovely husband to allow me to use them as stables is if it can be used for alternative uses as well!!

Gates work well

Gate lined with stokboard is what we use if we want to cover a gate. It will last longer than any wood products and will not splinter or rot and can be pressure washed off for lambing
