Stallion attack photo:

Totally agree with sending photos to the local paper. This will also help to warn others before another attack happens (this one was serious enough - hope your friend isn't in too much pain). They will probably just move the stallion elsewhere, but hopefully it will be somewhere from which he will not pose a danger to anyone else.

My horse & I were attacked by a dog out hacking (we ended up in a ditch), where the owner was present (he let go of the dog as we walked past). He showed no regard to us only said 'you've scared my dog' when my friend who was riding at me rode at the german shephard & scared it off. He ran off then calling the dogs name. We made up posters with his description, the dogs, the dogs name & posted copies all over the woods & in local shops to warn other riders. I was an adult on a 15.1hh horse, if he had gone for a child on a pony it could have been so much worse. There was nothing we could do legally about him (not like he gave us his name & address), so we tried to make it so he didn't want to walk his dog there in case he was recognised.

Gosh that looks extremely painful, it must of been quite a terrifying experience for you all...

Regarding the scarring on her leg... Once the skin has healed over rub some Bio Oil into the area where the teeth have damaged, do this twice a day. Its fantastic stuff, I was left with a 12 inch scar after an injury and I started using Bio Oil twice a day after I had the stitches out, it is amazing how little scarring I have now. My consultant called it 'Miracle Juice' and he was right... Its about £10 from the chemist but it lasts for months and months :o)

That's a really nasty bite!! Well done for staying calm and keeping a level head in such a situation!!! I would also as others have said speak to the land owner, any livestock on his land are his responsibility to keep contained, he should also have third party liability insurance which you may be able to get something out of to cover the horses vet bills at least.
I would get a really good shot of that girls bite - with a ruler or something in it for scale, plus the horses injuries and pics of those with something in them for scale, and keep a detailed note of all the treatment and how much it is costing. Would definitely echo the local paper - it's funny how the police/council will sit up and listen when the press is involved!!:D
Do pursue it though as it is a danger to the public, imagine if someone is on their own riding and gets attacked, stallions can and will kill to protect their herd - even the most well behaved domestic stallions still have that instinct, and at half a ton or more they are pretty dangerous in the wrong hands, so this poor horse and his mares needs to be somewhere with people who know what they are doing and care about their stock!!!

For God's sake, are you telling me that someone's animal can do that to a member of the public on a public right of way and get away with it????! No one cares? Ludicrous. Doubt owner of said stallion has insurance but I'd be claiming something off of them. Appalling. Poor girl. Hope she's okay. Enough to put the fear of God into her over ever hacking out again

That sounds horrific. However, on the positive side, the bite is unlikely to leave an obvious scar. I had a similar wound on my ribs after being bitten by a stallion 5 years ago. It looked like I had a bright red tattoo on my ribs. Within 6mths there was a really faint outline of the bite left that was only visible in certain light. The next year it reappeared when I had a tan but now there is no sign of it. As I say it was a very similar injury and the teeth were outlined and skin broken on mine too but it has not left a permanent scar. Getting yer confidence back will be the bigger ordeal.

That looks awful - I've just been reading through your first thread re the attack. I would expect that your friend will be left with some soft tissue damage and some lumps which may last for a long period of time. I got bitten about five years ago and had a bruise which was only about half the size of that on your photo and I have been left with a lump from the soft tissue damage. I can fully understand the pain your friend is in - it really is agony!! I hope she feels better soon.
Don't rush back to hacking out - take your time and wait until you feel like you really really want to.

Thankyou very much for all the kind words and help!

We visited the scene on foot today, horse is back in the field. Got some photos off the stallion even though with barbed wire between us he looked so docile. It did make me think though how he has possibly scarred us for life, emotionally and physically, yet hes already forgot who we are. Here he is:

sorry to hear of your friend's injury. Please make sure your friend goes back to the hospital/doctor at the first sign of trouble.
A similar thing happened to me. (It was our stallion so no one to blame)
I ended up in hospital after the third day on an anti biotic drip. After several days of various scans etc it had to be operated on to debride it. It also needed plastic surgery which didn't work. I was in hospital for nearly 2 weeks. I had no idea that any of that was going to result from what seemed a relatively simple but very painful bite. Best wishes to your friend for her recovery.

Did you say you have got the police involved?

As a vet would be able to match those teeth marks with the stalion and that's proof he did it.

Also, as another person has said, if it was a dog then it would have been put down for that.

What if an innocent child with a parent rides by and it does that to the child?

You owe it to other people to have these owners done for this, I mean how would it make you feel if that happens? That would could potentially cause a loss of a childs leg!

Please please do all you can as I know I certainly wouldn't want that on my concience, should anything happen.

Please go to all your local press and tell this story. Even tell it to Horse and Hound.

If you need any none professional advice then all of us here are around to give our opinions, although, of course they may not be correct though.

Oh, my! That hurts to look at! What a frightening experience and like others, I'm just appalled that seemingly nothing can be done to make anyone take responsibility.

However, as to scarring, I had similar on my shoulder years back when a friend's nasty gelding literally picked me up off the ground with his teeth and shook me. Thought for sure you'd be able to see his teeth marks forever but you can't even tell.

My hopes for a speedy recovery for all - physically and psychologically. :(

Sorry, referring to your friend really and hope she recovers well with the injury.

Someone MUST be accountable for this awful event.

Poor girl.... I hope she's ok

Call me a cinic, but I bet the reason the police don't want to know is because the owner's a gypsy. :(
