the struggle continues!
i posted some wanted adverts here and there online asking people to email me stallions standing in lancashire this season. i have had quite a good response - some have been a straight away No No No! a lady i used to be stabled with emailed - which is good as i already know his temperment etc. (Fresian stallion) but another one has really caught my eye and i would like some opinions on the matter!

he is a 16.3 Coloured (what am i thinking!!!! i am normally an anti-cloured girl!) dutch warmblood. he is only 3 and this is going to be his 1st year covering. the owners have bred before and intend to cover their arab with him as soon as shes in-season, but i keep asking for their stud terms and dont seem to be getting anywhere - now this could be as its his 1st year maybe???
hes of sambertino breeding.

i would appreciate opinions on - using a new unproven stallion - esp with a inexperienced mum!
using more of a private stallion owner rather than stud?
and if anyone knows more re his breeding as i recall there are a few ppl on here with horses of similar breeding?

am going to try and figure out how to add pics!

What has the mare done and what breeding does she have? Also what do you want to get?

Unproven + unregistered mare + unproven young stallion can = worthless foal as you've got nothing to say "this is what he'll turn out like". Could also breed a worldbeater!!!

ooo - sorry - forgot to add more on this post re my mare - its as i have posted a few times!

My Mare
show10245s.jpg

my mare is a 16.1 Dappled Grey Irish Sports horse from Ireland - on her dads side a lot of racing lines - somewhere i have the stats for what her dads side won racing wise - without getting her paperwork out i think her grandad was imported to ireland from the usa and her grandma from france - (might have been great grandparents?) i may be wrong, but i wouldnt have expected in the 60's/70's (or earlier if its the great grandparents) horses to be moved internationally if they were 'just neds'

i'm looking to produce a nice allrounder potential competition horse. over 16 hands, obv nice temperment, conformation etc etc as we all hope to be able to achieve!

said coloured stallion is registered KWPN and they have emailed me a copy of his pedigree (quite hard to read as hasnt scanned in very well)

i'm going to arrange to go and see him in person but i'm just wary of it potentionally a private owner as the email is a stud email addy however its just seems weird the terms dont seem to be set out.

still trying to get to add stallion pics!

Looks a lovely sort of mare and to get your allrounder you could add anytype of stallion - your warmblood one or a TBx something. I don't think i'd go down the lines of the Fresian though.

I wrote an article for something about "how to choose a stallion" if you give me your email address i can send it and it might be helpful?

thanks sw123 - that would be fab - will pm you my email addy!

the Fresian - app hes throwing his dads height - 16.1 but well - i have been able to finally get to add the pics so you can see! its just i know him and know he really is a nice genuine gent. but this other has really got me interested!

another question - how do you go on for registering a foal - if its a private owner will there still be a covering certificate etc and will foal be eligble for registration - i'm a bit of a weirdo and i prefer horses fully papered - not to say all of mine are but i really prefer them that way! i know a lot would depend on breed society really maybe???

Stallion i already know

Out of the two I would preferre the Freisan...am not too keen on the coloured I'm afraid. Have you havd a look at the stallions and country farm?Or even End House Stud, The Humerist and Aimbry Chester(although only 15hh) are lovely

Not keen on either - however freisans are not my thing, so that's a personal choice.

Photo's may not do the coloured justice. But it looks hideous, and I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole.

hi Tinker - not too keen on any up at Country Farm - a lot have suggested Ontario and i know someone who has a friend with one of his foals and apparently its fab but i am not too keen to be honest - Squires Stud up the road from Country Farm have one i quite like the look of (Squires Diamond) and Flight View also have one (Splash Million) but they havent replied to my enquiry yet.

Just to add, that I think your little mare is just lovely. If she were mine she'd be going to a TB plain and simple.

the owners had no pics of the coloured so brought him in from the field, gave him a quick wash (on one of the pics they sent me you can see the buckets and sponges etc!) and took some pics for me. they say they want to get a bit more weight on him. hes just started work so hes bound to change a bit more once hes built up but is it worth using him to cover her on the chance hes going to be like his dad and be fab ... i guess lifes all about risk!

not come across Mooiman i dont think - going to go search him!

ps - thanks amymay - she is cute most of the time

It's his legs I don't like. It will be interesting to see some better shots of him. I wouldn't have a problem using a first season stallion if I liked the look of him - so for me the only issue with the coloured is how he looks. His basic confirmation looks okish - just nasty legs. Which is a big no, no.

But again, could be the photo's. To me though he looks long in the pasterns and straight in the hock.

PROGENY PERFORMANCE
as of 2006 42% of his progeny, old enough to be ridden, are competing in their respective disciplines, Nationally or Internationally.

just trying to find out about the dam..

SSM - ooooh! I really like him.... thinking of breeding off my tb mare in 2 years time... will be keeping a note of his details....

Righty - i am now offically confused!!!! i've printed out the pedigree they sent me a few times - resizing it to get a better read - its very distorted - have managed to get the name and put it into the allbreedpedigree site and got it up - BUTTTTT - the date is 1998 - now this coloured is only 3 so its not his! going to email them back!!!

StinkerStonkersMum - i'm not opposed to a CB as i already have a TB X CB

hes 26 this year bless him!

out of interest - how much stud fee do you think they are asking for the coloured??

[/ QUOTE ]

Genius!!!!!!!!!!

However, as you seem determined to use it - ask them if they will give you a free covering if your mare is the first to be covered.

ooo - i'm not determined at all! i'm just gettng more and more curious about it!
not sure i would trust my mare going away there if they have managed to get pedigrees mixed up etc!!!!!!

might be worth asking them about the covering thou!! but what would i save - the stud fee? not worth it if i am just going to get a dobbin! i like dobbins yes but dont really want to breed one - i have emailed them again re the pedigree and asked for better pics and i will see what they come up with - i still intend to go and look at the others i mentioned earlier
smile.gif

had a reply re the coloured - the papers she emailed me are from his sire - he is reistered with CHAPS - they have no other pics as like i said before - they took thos pics for me!

i guess i could go and see him - and take my camera?

I love your mare - mines a double! Shes by Ala Hounak out of a King of Diamnods mare. I am thinking vaguely about stallions for the future and decided more Irish blood - either a LW (ish) Irish Draught or an ISH. I'm to the ID what SSM is to the CB!!

Have you thought of using AI? That way you would not be restricted to stallions standing in Lancashire and would have a wider choice.

My stallion stands in Berkshire, but is available by AI anywhere in the UK and Europe!

Your mare looks lovely by the way - she deserves a really good stallion!
