Hi

99% of the time my lad will stand for me to get on at home, and wait for me to do the girth up etc.

However, if we are somewhere exciting, like a sponsored ride, or a hunter trial, all this training just goes out the window.

I hate it, and really wish I could get him to stand there too, but at the same time really don't want to get in a fight as when he is excited anyway fighting with him just makes it worse, and I really need to keep him moving to get his excitement bubble to burst as soon as possible!

So my question is, at events like that, or out hunting etc, do you just sort of forget it, and accept that there is no way he is going to stand? And hope that things get less exciting the more you do it?! And that maybe some day in the far future he will be able to stand anywhere?

Certainly out hunting I get into the saddle as quick as possible I just think it upsets the difficult ones up more if you make an issue of it , I hate it though.

I feel your frustration!!! I always make sure I have someone on hand to give leg ups and have got really good at seizing any opportunity (e.g. When something has caught her attention and she's stood still) to get on super quick with my fidget-bum horse!

Nearly always get a leg up when out and about. It's just easier when your horse is spinning in circles around you and won't stand still by the ramp!

We just have to get on ASAP and then do girth etc on the move. That does depend on someone being around to give a leg-up though. V difficult if you're on your own, you just have to be super-speedy at grabbing a fly-past opportunity off a bumper or ramp - it's not my forte now that I'm older and less speedy!

I tack my big lad up on board the lorry, then walk him round the site until he has stopped being quite so overexcited, then bring him back to the ramp. I also find that gettign there early enough to use his massage pad whilst he looks over the back doors of the lorry helps him to settle.

At the moment I'm doing the speedy leg up option when we are out. Does require having an extra bod to hand though so I am not looking forward to trying to get on otherwise. Hard to repeat the training format etc at home when you are in that sort of environment - we're much better at home and def improving so I am hoping that eventually that will translate to being out, but at the moment being out is too exciting to remember our homework !
