Standing Martingale

Well thanks all for your great advice i will bare it in mind x
I jumped with a standing bsja yer( i just wasnt sure whether it was legal or not)

Im going down the yard now to put my horse in his standing martingale ,running martingale , caverson , mexican grackle, pelham might even put the draw reins on for abit even double bridle if i have to after his performance yesterday

Do u not think ive tried taking everything off and starting again i ride him regulary in snaffle with no martingale we always end up back where we started x

Ow well as long as me and my pony are happy im sure thats what counts cuz beleave me he is alot more un happy when he doesnt have it on !

Actually i had two very strong horses that i SJ'd for many years this way and it never affected there jump or soundness.
It meant that i could get away with just a french link snaffle instead of putting more tackle in there mouths.
One was an ex event horse without a mouth and it worked a treat on him.

Ever thought maybe he is running away from the strong bit in his mouth and gadgets etc?? Why not got back to basics for a while and get him schooling nicely at home in an easier bit, then continue your jumping once you have more control??

yeah but a horse can do lovely flat work and jumping at home then you go to a competition and wham stick nose in the air and go round as fast as possible interfer with their mouths and makes them fight against you put stronger bit in and they fight against it. so why not use a standing martingale if it helps. Its not as if the horse is jumping everyday and using martingale everyday.
Question how would you measure the length of the standing martingale ie not making it too tight.........

Aw thanks, we do have some at home somewhere, I was just trying to find a proper one out of principle

I was always taught to measure it up to the top of the neck (midway down crest) if you know what i mean...

But instead of wacking on a pelham, grackle, cavesson, draw reins etc etc - just have a slightly kinder bit with a standing martingale....i think there is a point when you end up having too many gadgets on a horse!!

i think *if im wrong say* that to measure one when it isnt attached to the cavesson you need to be able to lift it up to the horses gullet (under the cheeks - hopefully you know that place i mean!) and it needs to touch there.

*is this right?*

Sounds to me like you're just piling gadgets on to cover the problem. Of course some horses can be difficult and need more control, but that is a ridiculous amount of tack just for a schooling session at home.

That is what I was taught. I am guessing (well hoping) it is correct.

Standing martingales are great if used correctly - my old horse had one , i had one with the elasticated bit in the middle so still had abit of "give" far safer than when he used to chuck his head up and not see the fence!!

that video was before i had standing see his head keep bolting up !no standing and horrible

I don't think they're a good idea for jumping, and have never seen them used jumping and think i is just an excuse for not wanting to put the effort in to school the horse

i've seen lots of show jumping accidents ...... overwhelming majority have been rider error....dont ever recall an accident being caused by a standing martingale... !

good luck !
