Hey guys,

Some of you may remember that I have had a lot of trouble with my ankle. Am having physio every 4 weeks and stopped jumping when I ride... my instructor has been fabulous and has organised lessons on a schoolmaster in a double bridle- really really enjoyed it.

I've now come to the conclusion that my ankle is going to get no better than it is- it's not very strong but I strap it up pretty well for riding and my boots are really supportive. Got a bit bored now of dressage so am jumping in my next lesson on a week on Monday.

Any tips? I realllly want to get back out ready for XC in the summer, and possibly the odd SJ comp at the local riding club... does anybody have any advice on jumping again after a break?

Thanks, Rach

Hi there,

you could speak to your physio and see if there are any supports that would fit under your boot,
could also try flexi stirrups?

I have arthritis in my knee it soon tells me what I can and cant' do. I find lengthening my stirrups between classes helps, as it's riding with short stirrups that kills, more than the acutal jumping.

Talk to physio about supports, but strapping/vet wrap are more likely to fit under a boot than any commercial support. Strapping can generally be tailored better to give only the support you need.

I broke my ankle and blew tendon on same ankle after XC accident where foot got caught in stirrup and i was dragged a bit. It took 6 months really before it stopped aching and lots of circling in the evenings whilst resting it> I was told to be careful for a year.

Stupidly though i had the plaster off on the Thursday and went hunting on the Saturday, but had to go home as i was unfit and ankle ached!

I did wear a support for all riding for about 6 months not just jumping. It takes time but you just need to be careful for a while and give it some support

Good luck

I broke mine badly last April, was in plaster for 6 weeks, back riding 10 days after the plaster came off, was jumping tiny stuff 2 weeks later, it really killed, was very stiff but I kind of just did it & within 3 lessons at 1 per week, was back jumping the stuff I was before the accident. It was difficult & a little dodgy as I couldn't get the weight down into my right stirrup, I went XC for the first time in September, had to do some of the course in trot. It never really came right, so 3 weeks ago had all the metalwork out, it is less painful & was riding 8 days after the op. I have never used any sort of strapping, as I felt this would restrict the little movement I did have even more. Have a sj lesson tomorrow, & have jumped round a small course, so will see if less pain means I can sit more level, hope so!!
