My clumsy young horse keeps standing on my toes and it hurts. Im just wondering if steel toe cap boots actually do the job of protecting feet?

I have had equitector boots, and would say they were great. I got stamped on by a cob, and it actually damaged the leather, yet the foot was fine. They also have a safety rating, meaning there is no vat on them and are very sturdy.

What size did you want, got a pair of size 8 regent steel toe caps brand new that i need to get rid of. I suffered hand injury in March and not needed them

Yep, totally worth having! They don't just protect your feet from the horses, but everything else, too. I dropped a wooden wing on my foot and while it put a knick in the leather, my toes were fine.

Just to say don't EVER skimp if you're going to buy steel toecaps and make sure you get ones from a reputable place / that do actually conform to the appropriate standards. If they don't and you got a stamping, it'd be beyond grim...!

Thanks Ill look at the equitector boots.

ONLY get the equitector ones, as their protection goes all the way round the toes. Most other ones have it on the top only. That means if the horse treads on your toes on a soft surface like a manege, your toes can be severed.....:-OOO

Ones with steel on top are ok for builders as they are working on hard surfaces, but not for riders.

Equitector ones are also quite a lot less clumpy (despite the better designed protection)and made of nice leather, really recommend them.

I have steel toecap leather boots & steel toecap wellies, I always wear them around the horses. It doesn't matter how hot the weather is I always use them as I understand the damage a horse will do if he steps on you. I cannot understand why I see people wearing flip flops & silly little pumps around horses? I don't pay a fortune for them, I got them from Sports World & a builders merchants I think.

Steer clear from boots sold under the umbrella of 'Equestrian', they are no better, often worse than proper 'work boots' & they will command a higher price because us horse owners are rich & have money to burn! :(

When you want to ride, change your boots for something more suitable.

Yes they are worth having, MANY a time whilst out on site either measuring horses up for saddlery or fitting saddles I have had them tread on me, the steel toe caps saved my feet every time.
I get mine from here, a good cheap source and they conform to BS standards,

This is not true. No steel toe caps will sever your toes.

I have heard this about severed toes too - yikes!! Rather have a couple of broken ones than no toes!

Ummm Im afraid they certainly could! and even in lesser cases they can cause severe injury - its simple common sense. Soft surface, 1/2 ton of horse on top of them, the top of the boot doesnt give at all, instead the surface and your food give and the steel on top is pushed down at an angle into your foot.

Having had a milder injury from them, that is definitely what happens.

I was always told steel toe caps are a no-no around horses. It only takes one stamp that's a tad too forceful and they CAN cave in - steel doesn't pop back up under any circumstances. Much better off with reinforced toes, for example Muck Boots.

Ditto!! A steel toe-cap that gets crushed into your foot by a horse will make the injury 10 times worse!! I don't risk it - and my feet get regularly stomped on by BIG horses! I've had badly bruised feet, but never anything as damaging as would be caused by a 'protective' boot being driven into my foot by one of my 17hh big biffers!!
