Yesterday morning, Stella woke up with hives all over her body, and purplish-red lesions on her neck. She was diagnosed as having had a severe allergic reaction to her rabies vaccine, which was adminstered five days earlier. Two Benadryls, a steroid shot, and the bumps had gone by yesterday evening.

However, she woke up today and the staph infection is on her tummy now; the hives are much better, though. The vet told me to leave her there, so that they can assess her more closely. We did start her on an antibiotic yesterday, to treat the staph, but I think they may need to give her some IV.

I am so worried about her

The poor girl is such a trooper through everything. She kissed the vet and cuddled up to the guy sat next to us in the waiting room. Nothing dampens her cheery spirit.

Typically, I have a work deadline for this evening, and am supposed to be flying to England on Sunday. Gah.

Huge vibes to the adorable Stella, hoping she feels much better soon and that it doesn't ruin her Christmas

Thank you. If she doesn't improve, my husband will stay here while I go to visit family in England; if she's really bad, I won't go at all.

We'll know by tomorrow, I guess, whether she's well enough to go on her wee soujoun to the country for Christmas.

Oh no!! Not poor Stella as well, poor little mite you must be so worried for her!! Luce and i send all the good vibes that we can muster and hope she makes a swift recovery!!

Thinking of you & Stella, let us know how she progresses!!

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Poor stella!... Boris sends his slobbery kisses of vibes....

Recation to rabies Inj... now that is worrying me!!! Boris had recation to his booster and his first puppy inj too and i want him to travel with me soon aswell.

She's like family to us on here so I hope she's soon dancing like a loon again! Big hugs and hope you still manage to have a good christmas even if you can't get here for the break. x

Thanks for the well wishes.

The vet called and Stella is doing better. They gave her intravenous Benadryl, plus some more steroids. If it flares up again tomorrow, she will be put on steroid tablets. She has to have two Benadryl, and an antibiotic, every day, for ten days. Poor mite is going to be stoned out of her squishy head.

I'll be picking her up in a couple of hours, and will post a pic (in typical prose fashion

).

(One of the pack, have your vet give a small injection of antihistamine before the rabies vaccine; my usual vet does this, but it was a junior vet who administered the shot this time and I guess she forgot.)

Eak...was worried when I opened that post

Aw poor little Stella.

This is the one vaccine that I hate having to take my dogs for. I know fine well it stings them and that there are often reactions to it.....trouble is, it's a necessary evil.

Well, she threw up late last night, but I'm guessing it was from a bone I (stupidly) let her have--idiotic considering that Simplicef, the antibiotic she is on, is known to cause GI issues. Anyway, she kept down a small amount of food this morning, lots of water, and is very sleepy now.

Here she is after returning from the vet yesterday. Poor poppet

And Tia, I hate giving the rabies vaccine as well. It does seem to clobber the system somewhat.

I think I'm going to call the vet and see if we can get her on a new antibiotic.

We have another vet appointment at 2pm, so hopefully we'll get her on some different antibiotics.

She is not her usual self at all, but did perk up when my husband got back from the gym (did a little dance, but nothing close to her customary breakdancing extravaganza).

Prose, does New York require annual rabies shots? Most rabies shots now days are good for 3 years and some research has indicated they may be good for up to 7 years. So unless the law requires that the shot be given annually, poor Stella won't have to go through this for another 3 years.
