Millie had PRP for a totally mashed up check ligament. I was insured so we went for the "throw everything at it" approach.
vet said for that injury stem cell didn't have better outcomes and would have used up the whole budget whereas PRP left plenty in the pot for repeat scans.
it did heal well, obv without a control it's impossible to say whether it would have done anyway. but the images at the time of injury were so appalling, it was worth going for as there were basically no organised fibres left really.

My horse had prp treatment for a medial branch suspensory ligament injury back in April. The vet I used was a specialist at a hospital practice and said there was not alot of evidence for its effectiveness for this kind of injury and if I was not insured he would not bother. Stem cell was not suitable for this injury or steroids. I had it done anyway with prp placed into 3 holes. What it did very effectively was to generate tissue to fill the holes. My horse came sound 12 weeks after with still healing to do. I do think the prp helped and strengthened the damaged part of the ligament, but I cant prove this. My horse had to stay in her stable for seven days afterwards with no walking outside at all. I have started a riding programme to strengthen the damaged are before turn out which is next weekend which I am dreading even with sedalin!!

The reason we are considering stem cell is because of cartilage damage in the stifle. I have emailed the vet hospital for more information and success rate vs PRP

I know of a few who have had the new stem cell injection ‘arti-cell’. They have all been for fetlocks and have worked really well. The studies also look good.

I think like all things it’s success hinges on the joint/tendon/ligament involved. If your insured go for it, if not then for me it would depend on which joint was involved. For example stifles are notoriously hard to treat as they are such a complex joint, whether it be steroids or stem cells and anything in between.

Do you know if the horses treated with arti-cell had to have long box rest? My mare has had it in her fetlock. Vets said 6 weeks box rest with an in hand walk twice a day until first check up, but 1 week in & she’s already very fed up. Hate seeing her depressed & cooped up.
