Horsey went lame last weekend. Vet came and couldn't find anything but though it was an abscess.

Farrier came on Wednesday and found an abscess, which I have been treating and horsey has been on box rest.

Today, there is no puss but he is still intermitiantly (SP) lame. I dont know if it is 'cos he has a wheel (shoe) missing (he is wuss TB), if there is a further issue or if horses with an abcsess are usually sore after???? Or maybe he has been on box rest so long he has forgotten how his legs work ?

Farrier is coming in Thursay to put a new set on, do I let him come? As I dont know if he is lame as he has a shoe missing???? I have lost the ability to make a decision

Has the abscess ruptured or been paired out by the farrier or vet?

I would get the farrier to come as they often have a better idea than vets when it comes to feet. In the mean time I would tub and police. Yes, horses can soon cease up if they are on box rest.

I wouldn't panic yet, these things can grumble on. There mght also be more abscess, or further abscesses or gravel. My farrier resorted to a Black and decker drill to get at one on my lad! I find farriers are often braver than vets when it comes to this sort of thing.

good old huggies nappies very hot water to draw them out put on with vet wrap and wait 2 days! then you will find its out.. thats what happend with my mare vet came out said it was bruising .. got a mate down told me what to get and what to do so i did then there it was .. hmmmm £200 later vets bill
/mates bill nothing just good old advice

It is possible that he has two abcesses, one that has been pared out and one still forming. I would let the farrier come and get him to poke about. Ours found one in each back hoof when the vet could not find anything.

I love HHO, You guys stop me panicing!!

Will get farrier to have another dig arond.

This may seam like a stupid question but does it matter which type of nappy? There seams to be loads of kinds (I'm very anti child, so nappies are abit weird to me!)

For an abcess I hot poultice for a couple of days but no more than that because I don't want to soften the sole too much. Then dry poultice. I don't actually keep in, instead I put plenty of padding over the poultice & loads of duck tape then turn out. The movement tends to encourage the abcess to burst quicker & I also have a much happier horse.

I'd have the farrier on Thursday - either the horse will be sound enough to have a shoe on or it needs further investigation.

no i just used the huggies pull ups as they seem to of fitted rather snug../
my horse had one in each hoof too but on the fronts.i was worried sick at the time but
was so glad when they burst.
i agree with nari.
movement and turn out.

ps i just soaked the hoof in hot water and savlon or hibiscrub then applied the nappy with the sides going up the leg then vet wrapped it up for a couple of days took that off if its burst and needs more to come out then do that again then do they dry dressing..
ie dry nappie and vet wrap.
