Mine are out , unrugged natives , with free access from their field to an all weather pen which then gives access to a concrete yard and their stables which are left permanently open ( rubber matting and deep shaving beds ) , which makes for interesting watching . If the ground is wet and they want to lie down they will do so in a stable ( often both in the same one ) . If the weather is absolutely appalling ( driving rain/hail ) they will stand half in/half out the stable door , but otherwise , depending on the wind direction , they will be standing outside , either on the yard under the stable roof overhang , in the corner of the small all weather pen where two buildings form high walls or under the thick 7' hedge that forms 2 sides of our boundary fence , but mostly they will be out in the middle of the field , whatever the weather , just eating or dozing . They are fed hay and straw on the yard , under the overhang and we are fortunate to be on slightly higher ground with well drained fields so it's relatively dry underfoot so it's a set up that works really well for us . Interestingly , they spend far more time in their stables in summer ,

Storm has hit us here. The noise is horrendous.

Filling up haynets was interesting. Currently keeping hay in the trailer while we deal with a rodent problem in the hayshed. Trailer was rocking wildly from side to side.

Went back for extra loose hay and lost half of it to the wind.

My youngster was a bit upset but happier after a cuddle and some reassurance.

Supposed to ease off in the early hours before we get hit by snow.

We have to bring in at night regardless in winter, but shut the door on the American Barn tonight. Winds are apparently 40mph here, which is not as high as in some other places but high enough for me.

I live in a loft flat, and the gusts sound very loud, so I am glad he is in!

I've always worried about "all those poor horses with no winter turnout". But my mare is out 24/7 and she literally stands in exactly one spot eating hay. So essentially the same as living in, just with more wind and rain ?‍♀️ (I do sometimes split her hay in half, and then she stands in one spot until the hay is all gone, and then walks across the field to stand in the other spot for the rest of the day!)

Ours are living out with a shelter and hard standing, with access to part of the field but tbh, they spend most of the time standing under cover. The only advantage to them is that they get the fresh air

Mine are both out. One is in his little herd with a hardstand shelter & a round bale in a feeder & the other also has the same but they have corner feeders with about 4 slices each in to keep them busy. The older one would happily come in but the younger one isn't used to being in & not fond on a quiet night let alone with this weather, so he's better off out with his buddies.

We are Catching the end of the storm as it comes from the south, all of ours are very happy to be in, thankfully we have a big barn and they are all snuggled up enjoying their hay. it is very flat here and the wind is hitting The house full on, we Have a 42ft flagpole (most houses have their own flagpole over here) and I’ve just been out in my pjs and big coat to wrestle the enormous Christmas tree net down off the flagpole before it snaps it (Hubby is busy, excitedly watching match of the day on our newly installed satellite ?). Not sure why pic is on its side ?997510DA-7587-4EFC-B7F2-FC6D28B69324.jpeg

My field shelter has had a bit of a exciting evening...
it's been there for getting on for 15 years and has now opted to wedge itself in between a tree and the hedge. oh goody. must have flipped 3x to get that way round!

Omg Milliepops! Hope you can return it without it turning into matchwood x
yeah me too! OH was hatching a plan when he left this morning. friend has a telehandler, he has a tractor with various toys, I think he is hoping they can lift it out to extract from the tree/hedge resting position and somehow tip it back up without it turning into a flat pack. a job for another day, the field is too wet at the moment.

80 mph winds forecast here overnight. Horses are going to have to suck it up with an extra rug as they aren't fans of being stabled at the best of times and their barn is made partly of corrugated iron which I'm afraid may lift off. Their field isn't the most sheltered ever, and I do feel a bit worried as electricity pylons run across it.

What is everyone else doing?
My yard is all in and all escaped any injury or damage

no. remarkably it seems to be mostly intact. the problem is going to be getting it back the right way without it disintegrating, as it's really quite elderly o_O i think the trick is going to be tipping it gently without a big crunch.

That looks surprisingly dramatic, but still relatively intact!

The only casualty here was the electric fence which was easily put back up this morning!

We had to get a field shelter out of a ditch after it had jumped a hedge a few years ago. Telehandler and large rachet straps were the way to do it, somehow Mr R was able to control its return to upright and landing without it getting jarred. A man that knows his job is well worth cultivating and a bottle of something along side any payment is an investment.

Ah, you’re all panicking me now! I have a mobile field shelter arriving on Tuesday after wanting one for years and don’t want it to end up upside down ?. I was listening to the wind last night and know I’ll worry in future. I will have to get some anchors - which ones do people recommend?

Mine has withstood much more severe weather in the past, the wind must have been *just so* to have whisked it away this time.

Horses were fine thank goodness, hay uneaten however which means they spent the night sheltering in a different part of the field. They looked as if they'd had a good night out, as if they'd been in a tumble drier, and my mare who never lies down when in (she hates being in) dug herself a bed out of the banked straw and had a lie down!

I was getting a bit worried that my poor pony spent all morning asleep, but I'm guessing she didn't sleep at all last night! A very noisy night, but I'm counting blessings there was no damage here.

We're snowed in here. Can't get the horses out of the stables and many of the liveries can't make it to the yard. Roads are littered with abandoned cars. It just won't stop snowing at the moment.
Some of the hardier owners are currently walking several miles to get here. Don't think the snow will melt any time soon, it's freezing.
