Storm Ciara - What are you doing with horses?

Indie will be stopping in. Her and her field buddy are at present on a smallish muddy field with no shelter due to them trashing the electric fence yesterday. Field that they got out of is still underwater so keeping them off it for a, bit. She'll be more than happy to stop in. She gets very bad tempered in bad weather.

I will reassess on the Sunday (due 55mph winds and heavy rain most of the day), but I'm tempted to leave my TB in for the day. Not ideal, but she's recovering from lameness and I don't think bombing round the field in a storm will do her any good. I also don't trust the fencing to withstand that level of battering, and if one particular side goes they'll be on the road. And I don't fancy my chances leading her in safely either quite frankly!

My retired one will stay out as normal, far too wise and sensible to muck about! I will keep a close eye on the trees etc.

Probably leave in - kept at home so will assess on Sunday. My riding mare hates wind and can really hooley in it so won’t take the risk. They quite like a duvet day and will get some time out in the school.

Mine will be out as they live out 24/7. We have a
large shelter plus tall hedges etc so hopefully they'll be fine, though I have chucked a rain sheet on the cob to keep the worst of the weather off him.

Mine are out 24/7 but don't have much shelter so if heavy rain and strong winds for hours i will bring them in not much fun standing around in that

Big spud will be in anyway as its still winter routine at the livery, my home herd will be in if they are at the gate and willing. If they are not, they will be left. But i'm 99.9% sure they will be at the gate and run me down to get in. even though they live out 24/7 they always know "bad weather" means mummy will get them in for a nice feed and sleep on a soft bed lol

If the rain comes with the wind like it’s supposed to my lot will be happier in, so they will be in apart from a period out in pairs in the all weather while I muck out.

Depending on how bad it is I’ll make the decision in the morning. If it’s really heavy rain they’ll stay in.

I don’t think it’s worth overthinking tbh OP. Your horse will undoubtedly be fine whatever you do. It’s only one day thankfully.

Mine have lived out for the past 5 years and would normally have been out in this sort of weather as we didn't have stables. They were out in the beast from the east and were fine! But as I have stables now after a move down the road I might as well use them, so they will come in in the morning. The only thing I can't decide is: do I leave them in their normal hillside field over night and bring in in the morning? Or, knowing the storm will be blowing in early morning, do I put them in the top field this evening where they can have access to the stables, then shut them in over night? I'd rather do the second but the top field is my summer grazing and I don't want it getting poached. I guess I'll just need to see what the ground is like today, as at least it's been dry for a few days here.

In 40 years of horse ownership I have never given a horse a day completely in. The least they have had is a walk out in hand on a cleared bit of yard, but usually 4 hours turnout is minimum.

Tomorrow I plan on some turnout in the arena. There is a shelter in the arena, that is bolted into concrete posts into the floor, with post and rail fencing. The stable doors all hock back. The big yard and arena gates have lost their hooks (on the list) so Mr Red will oblige to hold them. If it is as foul as 2013 was, then a couple of hours will do her.

Mine will choose himself, I’m guessing that means in, he hates rain in wind..70 mph winds due here with rain and then snow, so I suspect he will have several stay in bed days..but he has a barn to walk around in so not so confined..

Mine normally have the run of all of the fields and the sand turnout. However, I will be confining them to the sand turnout on Sunday. They will come in overnight as usual.

We've just been upgraded from yellow to amber too.

Weather is actually going to get going here overnight tonight with 50 to 60mph winds, before the storm proper hits us from 8am tomorrow.

Think poor ponies will end up being in from tonight. ☹ I hate keeping in that long but we are very exposed and it's better than having injured ponies I guess.

Mine are moving back onto a field with more shelter for the next 36 hours. Other than that, no changes here. I'm not planning to ride anything on Sunday though!

Here it looks to hit about lunch so I might turn out am while mucking out then bring in. Normally I'd not worry but we've got some trees covered in ivy and the ground is saturated so they could fall - & I don't want escaped horses.

But will assess in the morning in case forecast changes.

In the 87 hurricane our friends lost their wooden 2 stable block. Somersaulted down their field. Luckily their horses were living out and avoided harm.

Mine will be out too in 87 my stable in the garden landed next door and the field shelter was demolished have today secured anything that might blow about and have left a big open area to graze in all got waterproof rugs on though dont need them really and have had todays hay ration tomorrows is netted ready to tie to the base of the wooden fence posts so with a little luck they will get to eat some of it

I am a wuss. I live 12 miles from the yard down country lanes with lots of dubious trees. I'm paying for full livery for the day. He might get some sand paddock turnout while being mucked out but he's been exercised plenty today so he won't take any harm if he stays in for once.

Hen cabin where I was took off across the field and smashed up. Lots of shocked looking hens in the morning.

This is why I won't have chickens. I'd absolutely love to keep some but it's just too exposed and blowy up here.

Luckily all our stables are reinforced and nothing short of a nuke would shift them!

Mine will be out. I worry too much about the roof blowing off the stable block to keep them in as it has already had to have extra ties added.
