Storm Ciara - What are you doing with horses?

I can't help thinking a lot of the fuss is because it's going to cover the south...probably a regular winter storm for the north, I suspect. Many of the warnings relate to rain rather than wind. Not quite armageddon just yet.
Local airfield has extra secured all fixed wing this afternoon that couldn't go into hangars (v rare for them do do this), current gust estimates from them is excess of 63mph. Yes, am in the south.......

It's only since I left the South East that I've really appreciated this! We can have 4 weeks of torrential rain, all rivers burst, main thoroughfares under water etc etc, but it only gets a mention if it hits the Home Counties ?

Im up North, Met Office currently says around 25mph winds but rain for Sunday, Mon and Tues. Im hoping its not worse. The stable block where my horse is, were lifted and moved backwards in bad winds a few years ago with the horses in them. The stables were replaced, hopefully a good job was done!!

Mine decided they wanted in this evening so thought safer shut in stables rather than free range as it's already pretty windy. Did want to leave them out until the morning but they can go out on the sand tomorrow and in again tomorrow night as the field will be soaking. They've only had a few nights in so far this winter so not too worried if they have to be in for a few nights.

National forecast has given winds in excess of 60mph in general for the whole country, with winds in places being anticipated up to 80mph.

Yard Manager turns out in the morning so I've told her if she feels it's safer to keep Tigger in to do so. Left a haynet made up in case. She's got her own horse so if he goes out, mine will too.

I moved mine into the top paddock so they can get into their stables if needed. Though there is more grass up there so knowing them they'll just pig out all night instead!

So do I!
Airfield wind forecast here now updated to excess of 70mph mid morning..... sigh.
Its all quiet here atm, if it wasnt for the electric fencing I wouldnt be worrying so much. She has to go out at some point due to her stifles and if the forecast is what it says we have a couple of days of this :( Hope everythings ok for you

After much debate I left mine out. Its to be worse here tomorrow so they can come in during the day. I have one in on box rest and she was more stressed than them

Mines been out 24/7 bar the odd night this winter but he's in tonight now as I don't want him hurtling around in the dark. I'll see what he's like in the morning but he'll probably go out for the day & back in again in the evening. I'd keep him in but he'll go nuts if he's the only one.

My yard's declared a duvet day for tomorrow. Our fencing is mostly electric (although it's tensioned tape on proper fenceposts) and there's very little in the way of shelter, so I'm happy with the decision. Especially as my horse's fieldmates tend to be somewhat energetic.

I have decided on a day in for my yard our first since beast from the east normally they go out regardless. We are very open here and there will be debris blowing about I don't want them tearing about injuring themselves. They can go in school for a leg stretch and will be out as usual tomorrow as although windy is supposed to be dry and not as bad. Am up now at 4am as just been out checking the roof! All good so far fortunately.

I honestly don't know what to do - mine is in at the moment and am just off to the yard to assess if it's safe to turn him out. His fieldmate is out 24/7 and there is very little shelter. Am not looking forward to driving in this to be honest.

Mine will be staying in, my fields are very open, the haylage would just blow away and it takes me at least 10 minutes to get to the fields with lots of flapping metal on barns and tarps on farm machinery

Same here. I’m worried whether it’s safe to leave them in ?. Apparently it’s only just building and it’s awful already.

I’m going to turn out this morning and bring in early afternoon as forecast shows worse rain and thunderstorms this afternoon. Field has huge hedges on all sides so there is a degree of shelter. I’m in Herts.

Wind really kicking in here now. Absolutely wild out there. Overnight was very windy and lashing rain. Had to put ear plugs in as to get some sleep.

Ponies very happy in their stables. Had their breakfast in bed earlier. Going out in a sec to muck out. Think I'm going to have to muck out around them. Really don't think it would be safe to try and get them to the school which seems to be bearing the brunt of the wind right now.

Stay safe every one!

Executive decision made - leaving the TB in today. Risk of having my head taken off leading her to/ from field is too great, plus she's too likely to hurt herself being a prat in the field anyway. I'm off shortly to see what remains of the electric fence!!

Storm hitting us with it's full force now.

The noise is crazy! We are on a hill so we are getting it pretty bad. Wind is seriously strong!

Apparently the flood sirens are going off in Hebden Bridge. ☹

It seems alright for us up here, West of Scotland, it’s not as bad as I thought it would be, a lot of rain and some small gusts at the moment.

Rose and Fatty are in. It is very windy here with patches of heavy rain. We have two lines of French poplars, we have lost four over the years in high winds, I'm watching them sway ATM and wonder how many more we might lose today!

Seems to have been money well spent paying for full livery today. The roads to the stables are blocked by flooding.

Managed to get my lot out for a couple of hours - didn’t seem too bad at the time even though I nearly got stuck in floods on the way to them! Was quite entertaining watching them chase their hay round - then it hit hard! Was a bit hairy getting them in as they were VERY keen ? they can stay in until it settles - stay safe everyone!

Mine are free range. They have a track, stables, and shelter and can choose where they go.

They’ve chosen to hunker down on the yard, where the stable doors are open for them. Some sheltering inside, some on the yard under the overhang.

I’ve put them some hay in the stables (there’s a bale down the track where the shelter is). But they seem quite chilled at the moment. If there’s a noise, the leader, is coming out to investigate, and once he’s deemed itself going back in.

We’ve lost three trees so far, and several branches ? Thankfully none of the big ones. We’re counting our lucky stars that it’s winter and the huge Ash Trees aren’t in full leaf!

It’s getting wilder here now .
I have turned mine out in the sheltered field when the wind comes in this direction happily it’s the field in front of the kitchen so I can see them .
they are grazing happily atm.
luckily I have someone coming in at one so I wont have to bring in alone my knee is having a arthritic flare up and I am not very quick on my feet atm.
