Storm Darragh

I swapped my lesson for a groundwork one last night and glad I did. Everyone on the yard was wound up and agitated and I wouldn't have liked to have been sitting on the meltdown Indy 500/ rodeo combo performance we got. At least my trainer, who I have asked to help us with relaxation, got to see the worst we ever get 😂

Yard owner will play it by ear this weekend, they may be in all day Saturday. She is maybe a touch quicker to keep in than I would be but then I'm not the one leading them out to the paddocks in the morning.

Pretty calm and lovely here this morning. Just bought them in for meds and a quick clip on daughter’s pony just in case tomorrow is okay and she has PC.

Will probably get them in this evening as the stables are sheltered behind the garage and I don’t want them tangled in electric fence overnight!

I’m not 100% sure what to do with mine in a red weather warning 😳 bring them in and there’s potential for things on the yard to fly about, leave them out and there’s trees etc. i think they will be in but I’m going to have to do a run around and look for anything that isn’t bolted down this afternoon 🫣

Horses, on the whole, aren't stupid - they won't stand under trees in high wind - mine always stand out in the open when it's windy - safer than in a stable to my thinking albeit I'm lucky not in a red area for Darragh

They unfortunately don’t have much choice with the number of trees we have!

It's just been upgraded to red where we are. Often forecasts are worse than reality but we are cancelling being on the road after 7pm tonight, clearing garden of potential flying objects and have double fed the horses in case we can't get there. (They are out). If it's as strong as forecasted it's far too dangerous to leave the house.

I'm about 8 miles off the coast in West Wales, I'm actually very worried about this one!
I feel you... I'm a mile in. Just been strapping everything down and trying to make sure everyone will have some shelter that's not dangerous. Husband is putting silage stack netting over the old greenhouses to try to stop rogue glass panes becoming ninja death stars

And that makes all the difference although it it was stables with trees round them or field with trees I'd go with the field. I'm assuming there are areas of the field which are open, horses will choose them
I agree, I never have mine in during storms, too many trees that could cause damage.
I rug accordingly, stuff hay in shelters, make sure there is plenty of access to open paddocks.

Just heard that the local Charity Santa Ride is still going ahead on Saturday. It is absolute chaos at the best of times, so maybe someone might actually die this year 💀 Personal responsibility is always king of course but events shouldn't be encouraging risk-taking either. Bonkers.

I read that on Fb earlier, that is just idiotic IMO, and very irresponsible. And the mention of kiddies on ponies being led etc., for goodness sake would anyone risk their child in the sort of weather that is already here and worse to come. 😟

Eerily quiet at the moment just waiting for the storm to hit.Nothing around the house that can be blown away but a lot of trees hope nothing comes down.
Horses will stay out with the massive pole barn open off the fields and a load of haylege put in the pole barn so they can venture out if they choose.
Fortunately the local Hunt due to meet within a mile of us on Saturday has now cancelled (thank goodness !)
Since the storm of 1987 strong winds have always worried me .We had no power then for 10 days and no way to get a vehicle out for 3 days.!!!!!
Hope the power holds up hubby has the generator on standbye but hopefully we will be okay.
Fingers crossed for everyone .Say safe.

Honestly, the stories I have heard about previous years I already wonder why people bring tinies on ponies at all but doing it this year would be something else. Sad as it would be for the charity to have poor turnout I do hope people make the right choice.

Been quite nice today, but suddenly gone very dark.

Wind and rain due to arrive at around 5pm, so I'm bringing mine in at 4pm.

We're just too exposed to leave them out in such strong winds and they'll just stand in the shelter all night anyway (Bo hates getting wet! 🙄), so they may as well be in their stables.

It's very calm here, eerily so. Managed a nice hack earlier. We're about 12 miles off the North Devon coast so I'm expecting it to be bad, horses are well rugged and will be left out. As always when it's windy I will be worried about my shelters blowing away, which would be my worst nightmare!

Sounds totally irresponsible of the organisers.

We are about 15 or so miles, so a bit further in but high up and exposed. Storm Bert took a neighbours mobile stables and dumped them in the lane. Luckily our stables are in a big block built barn.

We're also high (just off the moor), everything has survived all the storms we've had over the last couple of years, our shelter is anchored with concrete posts!

We have a red weather warning too from 3am. I'm bringing everything in tonight, sheep included. We had flying pieces of roof with storm Bert which seems pretty tame in comparison to what we are about to get 🙈

Yes! We had trees down in the storm back in October I’m very worried about this we are very close to the coast 🫣

Well that’s exactly why they’re in & I’ve strapped everything down on the yard … no trees around there!

Steerpike that's where I am too. We must be sort of neighbours (in Welsh miles)!

Ditto I'm really worried about what's coming. My ponies are in their stables but with the doors secured open so they can escape back outside to the field if they need to.
I'm set up for a power cut with a torch, lanterns and candles and phone on full charge. I'm on my own here tonight and tomorrow, just the dogs for company, the wind is already picking up and roaring outside, it's going to be a long 24 hours.

I'm on the west coast too and am feeling very very nervous. Stay safe Sugarplum and Steerpike.
