Hi Hi,

We had to abandon our usual Wednesday morning powerhack 5mins out the drive gate this morning as the poor little guy was trotting out wrong.

I have no idea what it could be (no incidents, no hooning around in the field etc).

He was shod monday, so I rang the farrier and asked if he had tried to re-balance his feet/ had an apprentice shoe/ anything different at all and nothing!

So we have the back man coming on Friday- hopefully will cure it!

I dont think it is a conventional leg type problem as his walk still feels very strong, swinging well and tracking up as normal. He steps up with back feet when pushing him back. Crosses his back feet under himself if you turn on the fore hand. Will stretch and hold his back legs if you pull them up and forwards or stretch them out backwards with no wincing and has no heat/ swelling/ sore areas on his legs!

His trot is just wrong and he is really dragging his off hind. Its very peculiar, any suggestions to get me thinking before the back man?

(Should the back mans visit be inconclusive I will have the vet out, its just a process of elimination)

I never did find out how mine did his. I only had 3 days box rest then lunged for 11 days in side reins 10 mins a day.
hope it's nothing serious x

having done some research a weakness/ injury to that area does sound (unfortunately) right!

will see what back man says and then maybe lay off the jumping and start everything from scratch with a pessoa etc and long reining.

(I do have a tendency to jump to conclusions though!)

When you say 'power hack', did you trot straight from the off? Is there a possibility that he has tied up?

So two things most obviously stick out and could be the cause of your horse being 'wrong'.

He was shod on Monday and could possibly have nail bind (most likely in my mind), or due to you not allowing his muscles to warm up by walking for a good 10-15 mins he tied up on you.

he was fine in the school yesterday (although I did do more of a warm up).

can nail- bind miss a day? (I'm sure you understand what I mean)

it was a very definate thumpy scrape (sounds ridiculous I know but its the only way to describe).

yesterday, he was full of beans in the school and not at all reluctant to trot, as he was today.

I have never heard of nail bind skipping a day!

In my experience with it, its obvious almost immediatley and if not immediatley then certainly later that day. I would be skeptical to say it has 'missed' a day...

Could have possibly pulled something when the farrier was doing one of his hind legs (when they stretch them foward to finish the foot) and perhaps had a knock on effect around the pelvis area maybe? if he's not lame or even just a fraction footy, then I doubt it will be in the foot or leg if he's placing his legs correctly as he should do and there is no heat and swelling etc

I'd give him a day or two to see if there is any improvement, if there's no change I'd get his back looked at first, well that's what I'd do.

Sometimes horses are just like us, you know how easily we can pull a muscle and how it can be sore for few days, then your right as a bobbin again.

Hope it's nothing serious.

Chiro coming lunchtime on Friday, fingers crossed he will click everything back into place and it isn't anything more serious.

Will keep him more rugged than normal to try an keep the blood flowing and everything nice/ warm and comfortable
