Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me. I have an 8yr wb x welsh cob, chestnunt mare! she is a very senstive type!! I have just been up to try to ride her and she trotted up lame. She will start off sound and then go lame. So i put her in the school loose with just over reach boots on and she yet again started off sound then would go lame then sound again! If she went in to canter she was sound too! For every circle she did lame she would do 4 or 5 sound ones!! I then started prodding and poking! no swelling, no heat, found a tiny bit of mud fever that she got from the waxed arenas when i had her at uni last year which won't budge. Figured the over reach boots might be rubbing this so took them off and she trotted up sound as a pound!!

Then decided to try riding again this time with no o r boots on, first trot sound, second trot same as before! Shes sound on a tight circle, sound 95% of the time. She does have a splint on the leg but theres no heat or anything. She did the same thing to me last week, no quite as bad. The vet was out any way and said she was fine and that it was just her being her!

Just wondered if anyone had any ideas?? I dont want to call the vet again becuase i cannot guarentee that she will be lame!

Sorry this is so long, not sure how to make it shorter!

Thanks in advanced.

Is the splint recent - therefore an active splint? I know you say there is no heat but there doesn't always have to be for a splint to cause unsoundness, particularly if it is a very large formed inactive splint?

She's had the splint at least a year now. Its not particularly large about the size of my little finger. The vet had a look at it last week ad said it was fine, settled and shouldn't be causing any problems. If it was the splint though wouldn't she be lame all the time? Last year she did go lame off the splint and her leg swelled up but thats when it was active! Damn horses!! im almost convinced she's making it up so she doesn't have to work...........

Last week! Vet looked at her last week because she did the same thing and said she was fine, just being her usual over reactive self! i think ill trot her up again tomorrow morning and she what shes like! If only they could talk!!

There's usually a reason why they say 'Owe'

Why not ask the farrier to come back and look at if her shoes are too tight? It could be a simple case of nail bind.

I have just text him to see what he thinks to it.

And believe me she is over reactive, if one her her plaits touches her neck or head you have never ever seen a horse try to kill itself, you would have thought she had been stung by a killer bee!! but no it was just the plait!! But i do agree that theres is probably a reason, i just not no how bad!

is the mud fever you mentioned bothering her to touch it it open or scabby - if shes sensitive sort sounds a bit like mine this can cause them to be occasionally lame - its very sore when we get a split on chapped skin

I think it is the mud fever! I have just trotted her up again this evening and she was sound the first few times and then went lame again. She does leap about when you touch it but then she does that for most things so i don't no! Which makes me think that it is the scabs opening up. I have treated the mud fever and will assess again in a few days to see if shes better! Horses!!!
