Hi all,

I was recently told that appaloosa's have very low pain thresholds. I was just wondering if anyone else had ever heard this?

(to put it into context, Fox went lame (in both front feet) a week last Sunday. Had vet out but she couldnt tell what it was, so suggested bute and box rest for a week. Farrier was on holiday but he rang and told me to keep him in until he was back (this Thursday). He is still lame so have organised for both vet and farrier to visit at same time on Thursday. Cant remember which one said it, but one of them did!)

Thanks

i own an appaloosa and have never heard this said before and i dont see any reason as to why it would be the case. my boy is very strong, fit and healthy and is never sorry or sick. when he has his yearly jab, which is the only reason he ever sees the vet, he doesnt even know that its happening, so no evidence of a low pain threshold.
would be interested to hear the thinking behind this one.
hope you get to the bottom of the lameness and he recovers quickly

io is a major big girls blouse- first time he got a cracked heel- he collapsed groaning when i tried to see why he was stood on 3 legs! If he has a sore leg then i am not even allowed to look at it! Thankfully his brother is a more stoaic sort of chap

Ok thanks everyone!

Vet and farrier are coming in a couple of hours (eek) and hopefully we will get to the bottom of it.

I agree!

My Appy thought the world was going to come to an end if he even stubbed is toe! He once had a tick is his ear and I swear, he made such a fuss I thought he was dying. If he stepped on a grain of sand he would make a big hobble and sigh!

He was the most beautiful and incredible athlete (XC, SJ AND dressage) as well as a wonderful gentleman. Big boy too!

But I had to treat him like a princess :-)

Sounds like there are other forces at work here - to create a 'big boy' was your appy crossed onto another breed? ;) I caste my mind back to the winter when my boy was ill and I only knew because I know him so well - he was being too nice! (he's a stallion and has to keep up appearances though a softie really - because he is app). He let me inject him with penicillin which I was more frightened of doing because it was like stabbing my best friend! I gave him his feed and then got on with it without tying him up - despite me - cringe - failing to get the needle all the way in - he stood like a rock and let me get on with it - what a saint. It was a choice of me doing the injections or him going to the horse-pital and I really wanted him to stay at home. He is well over it all now thankfully.
All the apps I have owned, bred or know are lovely people. I hope everyone enjoys theirs as much as I enjoy mine.

My appy is the biggest wimp you could ever meet, he's a lovely little horse though just a massive wimp :p

He banged his head on the jockey door once and he stamped all four feet at once and was being a right woos for a half hour. He cut his nose the other day and won't let anybody touch it, but I don't think thats the appy in him he's just dramatic :)

On the subject of Appaloosas - I don't know if this is allowed but..... I have just completed the Appaloosa Calendar for 2011 which has been running for several years. I took it over in July as the people creating it previously had busier lives and non of us wanted it to cease.

There is usually a competition run for photos from 'appy' people to be submitted and then be judged but as there was not much time between July and now I just got my head round it and being an ex-photographer myself (and working for a printing company) managed to find some lovely full colour photos of appys and put something together.
I also announced it on the BAPS forum and lots of lovely people were very enthusiastic and submitted their photos - so there is a mix of good quality 'owners' pics and some professional.

Size of calendar is A3 and it comes with a board-backed envelope so it doesn't get bent in the post. Go to www.aphcuk.org and then to 'Appy Bay Sales' the calendar is at the top and if you click on the photo all the details are there. All profits are going towards promoting the appaloosa horse via the two breed societies and any other suggestions that come in will be considered. Thank you for reading. :) :)
