Strange scenario at horses field!

My two horses were moved up to the summer fields a week ago with another horse, so three in total,tonight when I went to do checks and water I noticed the third horse a grey had a very bloodied looking front leg! On inspection could find no wound puzzled.com anyhow started blasting with fly spray got round to one side of my mare and all her quarters were bloodied and big smears of blood, but again no wounds my other has nothing! So at the moment is confused.com pointless post really!!
 
Is the field secure?
I'd have looked around for an injured animal to find some reason for the blood.
Could anyone have smeared them on purpose?
Very odd and worrying!
 
Did you walk round the field to check if an animal carcass was there as they may have inadvertently rolled on it? I have found orangey-reddy patches on my horse which I though were blood - turns out they are pollen!
 
I got call yesterday from the lady who owns the horses next door, to say that the grey horse at the top was covered in blood, but his owner couldn't find a wound. So we all checked ours, but again, no cuts.
It's so strange that you've had similar. There was apparently quite a bit of fresh red blood in our case.
Perhaps there is a serial blood-smearer doing the rounds?? :-/
 
I too thought flies but really to much blood for that! I've done a fully reci of the field cause I thought maybe a dog attack and half expected a dead dog but nothing! The field is very secure...and been double locked and chained tonight!
 
any chance it's a nosebleed from the one with blood on the leg that's then decided to have a good nuzzle on the arse of their friend?
 
only thing i can think of is if one of them has had a nosebleed? and rubbed it on leg and been grooming the other horse or whatever and its got on there too ? x
 
The nosebleed makes sense! Hopefully that's the answer! Could explain it,but his bloodied front leg was more around the back! But still sounds the more plausible! Will check with owner to see if he has them!
 
Growths inside the sheath of my old cob first made their appearance known with blood on the back of his forelegs

Wouldnt explain the quarters of the other horse but maybe worth a quick look just in case
 
Im in cheshire. you? The grey had it all over his quarters/bum/back end. We've checked mouths, noses, bums, everything. But nothing. Confused.com!

Could another horse have tried to mount the grey? Maybe check the underbellies/sheaths of others in the field? Very bizarre!
