STRANGLES HELP PLEASE

They can also have had strangles in the past and still be a carrier. Many horses that come in contact with strangles dont get the full blown symptoms and just get colds and some dont even get that.

It could be that the lumps have come up on the neck, but the abcesses have not formed or burst, or there is no nasal discharge yet. It is unlikely that the horse will have transmitted anything if the nasal discharge isn't showing or the abscesses haven't burst. It is only at the point of discharge or bursting abscesses that the horse becomes highly contagious.

what happens if she is a carrier ? will she have to be put down ? my family have been in contact with this horse....so very worried....what is the next step ? she has been in a field all on her own for 2 months !

Most of the farm I was on a few years back got it mine didnt Vet said she was a carrier who would on show very mild symptoms if any at all

As Holly Hocks says unless there is discharge you will probably be ok. Wether the horse should be pts is a very difficult decision as why was there a decision to have it tested? My friend's horse had it and then had the test done and it was clear but what if it hadnt had been clear?

It is unlikely that the horse will just have been randomly tested. I would suggest there are some symptoms which has lead to the vet testing the horse and the test coming back positive. No, the horse will not be put down. Any horse could be a carrier and we would never know. The horse will probably develop full blown strangles, but as long as it has been isolated at this stage, and all hygiene measures possible are put in place, you should be fine. The horse will be treated with veterinary medicine and afterwards, once the guttural pouch has tested clear (three separate swabs at different intervals) the horse will be fully clear. Strangles is harboured in the guttural pouch.

Horse wont have to be pts, and as long as you take precautions, ie, wash, clothes, hands boots, disinfect etc, before contacted with other horses, you should be fine.

the owner was selling it and the buyer wanted her strangles tested as her yard wont let any horse on the yard without a strangles test (apparently a lot of yards in essex do this) owner was more than happy to have it done as no symptoms but shock of shocks test has come back positive !
