There's a local riding stables near me that have a confirmed case of strangles, they've isolated the horses that have it or have been in contact with the infected, but they're still running riding lessons & not telling clients about the disease, except for a few signs near the isolation area & places to wash your hands & boots.
Is it just me or should they stop riding lessons altogether? I know we have a girl who rides both at this riding stable & at our farm, but luckily I'd told her so she could disinfect her boots, clothes, etc!

Eh... no they should NOT be conducting lessons. Or letting people out before a full disinfection regime!? :O
Sorry getting over the shock here. If you are going to run lessons you have to warn people totally! :O
Some yards...

I wouldn't expect the riding school to close altogether - it's their livelihood. However it would be responsible for them to advise their clients not to go onto other yards without a full change of clothing and hand washing/disinfection first.

Exactly! I even said to my friend who has a horse at livery there (who's out in a field and is fine) about how ignorant it was to not tell riders about it, fair enough the horses aren't allowed off the land but that's not the only way it's carried!

Well I know it's already spread, it's in a few towns & villages in Wiltshire now, where it started from is a different matter. Just hoping my old girl doesn't get it!

In fairness, a riding school can't afford to close in the current climate. They should be taking precautions tho to stop riders passing it on tho.

There's apparently a RS fairly near us that has it . . . no notification on their website, horses still hacking out and about and apparently a couple of horses from there have been out competing at local PC and RC events (including this past weekend - one of our liveries was there too).

I think the issue will only be solved when it becomes mandatory to notify DEFRA (and/or the BHS, etc.) about strangles outbreaks.

DEFFRA are not interested and BHS. well nothing to be gained there imho.
Vets will notify the AHT, but if it was statutory and in the public domain, people would try to keep it underground.
