Would you buy a horse with it? I've little knowledge of the condition..so just wondering do you have one? Does it cause any problems? Anyone's experiences/info would be great
It is a technical unsoundness. It can get worse with age, and depends on how bad it is, some horses become better when they warm up and look normal, others have an obvious abnormality all the time. So if you wanted to do any showing, or into dressage, then no. If it is just for general riding club, hunting, hacking, etc. then it depends on what the vet says and if you think you can live with it.
However, there have been many successful horses that had stringhalt, including winning racehorses. My best ever horse had stringhalt, it was obvious when he came out of the stable in the morning, but worked off quite quickly and then there was on an occasional odd step. He was very sound and I evented and hunted him.
However, he went to a new home when he was 15 so I don't know how it progressed as he got older, although the vet wasn't worried about it when he vetted him for the new owner (I hope you aren't going to leave this horse in the field and do nothing with it was his verdict).
I've known a couple with stringhalt. One was very mildly affected and only showed a few steps of it as he came out of his box - once warmed up it didn't show and he was fine for dressage and eventing.
Another one was more exaggerated and wouldn't have made the grade for showing or dressage but didn't affect his fantastic jumping ability at all.
Thank you for your replies horse is 8 and would be used for sj/xc with maybe lower.level eventing, the horse has it mild in one hind..looks exaggerated in walk but not visible at all.in trot canter..and jumped a 1.05 track like there was nothing to it.
