Studs....CONFUSED!

ive always been taught to use the stud that i need (like a grass tip stud) on the outside of the shoe for grip, then a blunt road stud or similar on the inside of the shoe so that the foot is LEVEL and to prevent injury etc. It seems loads of people only have one stud on the outside of the foot and nothing on the inside, surely this cant be very good for the horses joints as the foot would be completely wonky on the ground! It would be asking for lameness if i did that on my horse! Is this normal or correct? im confused lol.

A lot of people do use only one stud. I asked my farrier about this and he said it's much better to use two and it keeps the foot level and prevents twisting. Hovere, i know lots of people who only use one and never have any ill effects.

I always use two as i personally don't like the risk and also don't like the thought of foot rotating or twisting on one.

Pairs are better for foot balance, however some horses tend to step on themselves so one stud is safer for those (like mine!)
However foot would only be "wonky" if ground isnt soft eno for the studs!

ok thanks! well at least im not the only one

yeah its just i have seen so many people at shows and hunter trials with just one HUGE stud on the outside, which for one is the wrong type of stud and doesnt even sink into the ground so the horses feet are tilting to the inside.. i think thats what my main concern was =]

I always use 2, but then i do have a very lameness prone ponio! And just the thought of being unlevel sends shivers down my spine, however my friend only ever uses one as her horse is very close in front and behind and the thought of the damage he would do by stepping on to himself means she has never tried two and she has never had any ill effects. As always if you are using the right studs for the conditions there shouldn't be a problem.

I just use one stud for above reasons.

Think about it this way though, how often is ground perfectly even anyway?

Ever watch a horse hobble across concrete wearing jumping studs? Foot isnt balanced in one as hoof tips to inside, hoof isnt balanced in 2 as hoof tips forward

Like my farrier said, as they are going into the ground they shouldnt affect horse wether you have one or two.

So IMO it doesnt really matter, just down to personal preference and horses way of going, conf.

I usually use two studs on the back and one on the front. If you are using the right studs for the ground they will sink in anyway so no problems with imbalance...and in fact my farrier has stated on numerous occasions that a single stud is preferable to two anyay as the horses natural gait includes an element of twisting when the hoof meets the ground. Two studs prevent that from happenning and so increase concussion

I have thought about this following various posts. I only have 1 stud in the outside hinds of my horse's shoes. I have hunting/road studs in for daily use and change them for competing depending on the ground.

I do wonder whether wearing the road studs are causing differing pressures on the hindlimbs that could be detrimental to my horse BUT he has worn studs I think since i have had him (13 years) and has not had any problems with his back legs as far as I am aware. However, i think I may query this with the farrier next time and maybe with the physio (I like my horse to have a 'session' at least once a year) and see what they say.

Oh i did ride out last year and hadn't noticed one stud was missing. My horse slipped on the road sideways and crashed down resulting in a broken collar bone for me! I certainly will not be removing the studs anytime soon!!!

I have heard opinions on both.....some say that 2 studs prevents twisting which is better, but then some say if the horses foot does twist, then if there two studs that will prevent the foot from swivelling on the ground and could cause a sprain higher up ther leg.....I tend to only use one for that reason and also incase he steps on himself! If doing XC in very wet conditions I will use two tho....so jury is still out really as far as I am concerned!

My horse has tungsten tipped hack/hunt studs in all the time, until we are competing etc when they get changed. This is only one stud in the hind feet.

But, I do worry about the uneveness on the roads however the tungsten tipped ones are the only ones that seem to prevent him slipping. I have heard of road nails, but what are those? Can anyone enlighten me? Ideally would like his feet not be uneven, but have the same amount of non-slip on the roads.

Sorry to hijack the post
