I have never bred foals, but have a close link with a TB stud. I was chatting to the stud manager earlier and the following is how his 2010 season has gone.
I won't state on here which stud, but its a big enterprise!
They stand 5 stallions
They own 90 of their own mares
At any one time they can house 200 mares
They have a seperate yard to house 30 yearlings
2010 they had 253 mares foal down between Jan 1st - last mare foaled May 25th
They sadly lost 7 mares
They sadly lost 24 foals
Out of the 229 remaining foals that are currently healthy, 104 colts : 125 fillies
Stallions have covered in total 400 mares, and 352 of which have been scanned in foal at 28 days.
First foal due 4th Jan 2011
How facinating is that?
Do you think that is good/bad?
and how has your breeding year gone (so far)
Colts : Fillies ratio?
