I have never bred foals, but have a close link with a TB stud. I was chatting to the stud manager earlier and the following is how his 2010 season has gone.
I won't state on here which stud, but its a big enterprise!
They stand 5 stallions
They own 90 of their own mares
At any one time they can house 200 mares
They have a seperate yard to house 30 yearlings
2010 they had 253 mares foal down between Jan 1st - last mare foaled May 25th
They sadly lost 7 mares
They sadly lost 24 foals
Out of the 229 remaining foals that are currently healthy, 104 colts : 125 fillies
Stallions have covered in total 400 mares, and 352 of which have been scanned in foal at 28 days.
First foal due 4th Jan 2011

How facinating is that?
Do you think that is good/bad?
and how has your breeding year gone (so far)
Colts : Fillies ratio?

Wow! Thats really interesting!! Its also a handy thing to know when looking for a stallion/stud I would assume. Im a novice Re breeding - my mare is off at stud at the moment, would be really interesting to get the stats for there! x

That is really interresting.

KarynK on here has started a similar project but involving data across many studs and breeders from this forum. She bumps the thread up every now and then(Thread is entitled BREEDING SURVEY 2010), asking everybody to email her for a copy of her spreadsheet. All the spreadsheets won't be back in until the end of the breeding season, because there are some late foals and there is a section on this year's covering season as well. But I am looking forward to the results.

I won't post our stats yet, as we're still foaling and I don't want to tempt fate! It is fascinating to see the stats of the really big studs....that seems a very high percentage of foal loss to me though - thats about 10% of foalings ending in a foal death which is way above a normal average.

We have a TB stud that I know, up until a month ago, had lost 19 foals and several mares this year which seems a huge amount to me especially as they are nowhere near the size of the stud that OP mentioned.

Bloody hell!! That is a MASSIVE amount of foals to loose!! Almost incomprehensible! That's nearly 10%! (I think lol - percentages and I always disagree!) I haven't come across such a large number of foals loses since I was in Kentucky during MRLS - do you know if there is common factor in these loses?

I don't know any more details regarding the foals lost, but the stud manager did say in the 15 years he has been manager its by far the worst record of loss he has had. 2 of the mares lost were VERY top class and he was devasted by that. Again, we didn't go into detail. When I was there (a few years ago now) we had a similar amount foaling and only lost 3 foals and 1 old mare.
I don't think the stud is alone, have known of quite a few high loss this year sadly. Here's hoping to a much better 2011 breeding season.

10% loss is poor stats. I would be seriously looking into why these losses occurred if this was my stud and seeing if there is any link as to why so many animals died.

It would be interesting to see what previous year's stats were like to see if this year is a particularly bad year or not.

Our vet (stud vets) seem to think there is a lot of problems around this year.

I work on a stud that deals with lots of TB's. Over 5 years prior to 2010 we have lost 4 foals and 2 mares out of a total of 318 foalings -
Then this year alone we have lost 9 foals and 3 mares out of 82 foalings. Its been a shocking year.
4 foals were still born
1 had a ruptered colon
2 premature
1 joint ill - first case in 7 years
1 broken leg in field when only 3 days old - mystery to how it happened.
mares lost
2 colic
1 ruptured

It has been a sad year.

It seems everyone you speak to who breeds has had a bad year at some point, either not in foal, lost foal before term, still born, lost mare or both or had sick foals. What a horrid year.

Such nice people, I've managed to get 2009/2008 details
2009
268 foaled down
lost 1 mare
lost 4 foals
147 colts ; 117 fillies
419 mares covered , 398 scanned in at 28 days, 380 in foal 1st oct terms

2008
231 foaled down
2 mares lost
4 foals lost
124 colts ; 103 fillies
350 mares covered (4 stallions) 339 scanned in at 28 days, 330 in foal 1st oct terms

Personally, I think thats brilliant, and it hopefully shows that this year was just very unlucky and a one off.
