"Stunning!" Help! The equine nation has run out of adjectives

But what else would do as an adjective? Eye-catching, head-turning, exceptional... Stunning sums it up nicely. Especially if there's photos which show them off.

I HATE bad photos! I reckon some horses you could add £1k to their price with better photos...

I have never, EVER been to look at a horse described as "stunning" that actually was. In the eye of the beholder, and all that. If there is a photograph with an ad then there really is no need to describe what it looks like, is there?

"She is a real mare. She is as fat as butter. " quote from DD advert.

Sorry couldn't resist this.. But at least it doesn't describe her as stunning. :D

True.

But beuaty is in the eye of the beholder and all that. I reckon Reg is one of the most beautiful horses around, but lots would beg to differ- he's a plain bay TB, dime a dozen...

The wording I hate is 'pops' a jump

It always makes me think it's not had any formal training but if you point it at a jump by luck it will scramble over it

I'm astonished at how many horses are advertised as being "out of" a particular stallion.

In my day they came out of mares and were "by" stallions. I guess times have changed. ;)

Oh I so know what you mean! It really means nothing when you see it that many times! If I've clicked I don't think it is hideous, now give me actual info!

I don't mind 'flashy' as sometimes movement can really make a horse light up if it doesn't look that amazing in a pic. I like simple things generally more describing their attitude like 'genuine' 'versatile' 'quick learner' 'loves to please'... The ads that stand out to me are the ones where a bit of thought went into it and they have gone outside of cliches, some of them are actually quite comedy and refreshingly honest, I've never not liked an ad like that!

I quite like one or two negatives too, although I understand why someone might not put them in an ad. I think e.g. 'can be nappy' 'can be strong' 'bucks when excited' can actually describe a bit more about the attitude of the horse and is not always a bad thing.

I am always surprised by that fact that every Irish horse advertised has hunted. 'Hunted in Ireland' replaces 'stunning' on all Irish horse ads but when I lived in Ireland for a number of years and worked on some very big yards which exported large numbers of horses to England none of them had ever hunted but we saw plenty of their ads online or in H&H as 'Hunted in Ireland' even when we had not made that claim. Every time I see someone comment on here that their new Irish cob has hunted in Ireland I want to comment that I wouldn't count on that.

Funnily enough I thought the same thing yesterday when coming onto the H&H site and 3 of the 4 thumbnail ads on the homepage started with 'stunning' - and priced at £1600, £4000 and £10000. So it's an adjective that covers a wide price range!

My horse is spotty :)

B1 always gets described by people as genuine, what as opposed to the fake horse I keep?!

My adjective would be honest coz both mine are totally honest 99.99% of the time.

HS - I'm so sorry that the horse failed the vet. :(

Thank you. And yup, as predicted I got a load of grief and no deposit back yet. They were hinting that sales livery owner kept the horse for two weeks for me so my deposit was void. They haven't actually said that outright, but 'two weeks' at owner's expense, etc. was repeated numerous times. Parting shot that I won't get a horse for 2k to pass the vet. Fortunately I had recovered my composure enough to say that my budget was actually 3.5k and it was they who were selling the horse for 2k. And that a 6yo that had done nothing at all should pass a vet check.:mad:

Anyway, on a much lighter note...see, we have many, many other adjectives at our disposal. I shall make it my mission to contact all advertising outlets to distribute a list.:D;):D

Oh, and do we think this one is actually backed? http://www.preloved.co.uk/adverts/show/108273241/161hh-coloured-mare.html I have left umpteen messages for the seller, who leaves no 'phone number.

Hard to tell from the blurb if she's backed but she's gorgeous!!!

As far as adjectives, G's would be "goofy" tho I'm not sure that would entice anyone to buy him. Same goes for my 6yr old daughters pony who I'd have to describe as "hates children" :D

Well, I think Kali is stunning . . . but then I'm horribly biased. I still go to competitions and catch Z warming him up out of the corner of my eye and think "ooooooh, that's a nice horse . . . " before I clock that it's Kal. However, I wouldn't put that word in an ad . . . if I had to come up with just one word to use in an ad, it would be "sweet" . . . which, coincidentally was the first word in his ad when I bought him :D.

The only other word I could use for him would be "comical" . . . because he is.

I've just checked the old advert and yep, the last horse I bought was advertised as "Absolutely stunning" in the opening line. :o To be fair though, she IS drop dead gorgeous. The boys on the yard call her Black Beauty.

it is amazing how many ads are full of non-information! My pet hates are , yes, stunning, also, first to see will buy, and my personal bug bear, "paces to die for"....whats wrong with correct paces or extravagant paces etc. So, here's my Perfect ad!!
Stunning Horse, Paces to die for, does it all, lovely person, top class potential, first to see will buy, POA...any takers!!

Cam had "A type hard to find" as the headline for his ad and actually that's pretty true.

I still laugh at another line in the ad though: "always friendly- we have yet to find something he’s not into!" He is downright nosy, and always wants to know what something is or what's going on, and regularly falls over his own feet as he doesn't seem to be able to look and walk at the same time. Even looking back at his ad a year on, he is still as described. :)

Oh god, yes - 'First to see will buy.' - what a load of nonsense

Another thing I don't get- if you have good photos and the horse is a common colour, e.g. bay, black, chestnut, grey, why do you need to mention this in the advert? Surely most people can work it out for themselves?
