After a gastroscope in November, my Welsh Cob was diagnosed wth gastric ulcers. He had a course of gastroguard for 2 months (during which he was re-scoped and ulcers had gone). Then was re-scoped 3 weeks after finishing the gastroguard and ulcers had reappeared. His management is (and always was) what you'd do to reduce the risk of ulcers anyway. (Lives out 24/7- although he's brought in at night this winter since he was poorly in Nov- good doer so only gets hay and a lo-cal balancer). He's now on another 2 month course of gastroguard after which the vet has suggested the possibility of putting him onto 'Succeed' which is apparently a 'digestive conditioning programme' and is supposed to work on the whole digestive system as a 'buffer'. Does anyone have any experience of it and does it work? If not, what else are people using as preventatives for gastric ulcers?

My mare had succeed for a couple of months as a free trial, but I have to say when u read the ingriedients, its just Oat Flour, Oat Oil and Yeast, it costs over £100 a month thats bloody expensive for a bit of flour, oil and yeast.

My mare is on Ulcer Calm by feedmark, u just need to keep stress levels down to a complete minimum and always give adlib forage!

one of my liveries had loads ulcers nearly died

the last bloods showed one left , now recent bloods showed high levels of white blood cells.

they are baffled why they are so high 33. 000

Yeah. Must say, I thought the same about the ingredients. That's why I wondered if anyone's had any success with it. Do you rate Ulcer Calm then? How expensive is that? Don't mind paying as long as it works!

My boy is the least stressed horse you could ever meet. He really seems to take everything in his stride and is so laid back it's unbelievable. Really doesn't seem the stressy type to get ulcers.

I like Ulcer Calm, and its not too expensive especially if u manage to get it from there trade stands at 40% off and a large tub lasts 6 months, apart from when my mare went on hunger strike and gave herself the ulcers back, its done the job!

I used it on mine after a course of gastroguard. The ulcers my horse had were down to pain I now think (he had various issues going on) It is still I think a fairly new treatment. I think I would be trying to find out why the ulcers have come back. As far as I am aware ulcers can only really be treated with gastroguard and also if your horse has other issues the ulcers may well be there but not causing any problems if that makes sense.

no no id recommend comfort gut...best thing out there at the minute :)

dont know exactly if it targets ulcers but it could prevent them reoccurring :)

My boy is on a trial of Succeed atm (2 and a bit months in), he doesn't have ulcers but cribs. Doesn't seem to have made any difference to him or nothing noticeable for the cost of it, if you can get a trial through your vet (like I did) then go for it, but it seems expensive otherwise!

I used it on recommendation from my vet when my horse suffered a bout of colic during box rest. Absolutely rubbish! Couldn't tell the difference and would never but it again.

Did you find it worked with your horse or not? Is he still on it or did you just give it for a short time period? Yes, I think you're right. Gastroguard is the only thing that actually treats ulcers. I just want to do something as a preventative once it's finished. I think the vet must be sick of me asking the 'why' question! He says that with ulcers it's often difficult to pinpoint why they occur and come back, especially as my horse should be a fairly low-risk case! Just wish I knew the cause as we'd be well on the way to preventing them in future! As far as I know, he doesn't have any other issues. (When I said in the original post that he was brought in because he was poorly, that was when he started with the ulcer symptoms).

I didn't see any difference with Succeed, but have been impressed with Equine America's Ulser Gard. My vets also recommend corn oil, but if he's normally a good doer he might not benefit from the extra calories.

Hi, my horse had a problem with ulcers, and instead of Gastroguard I was recommended a product called Gastro Plus, which was much less in cost to start out with. I also liked the idea that once one course is completed the horse should not need additional treatment. So far so good...my horse seems to be absolutely fine for the last 7 months, no ulcer signs whatsoever! Maybe speak to them, they are very helpful when it comes to advising the right treatment. The company is called Equine Science, and they have a UK website where the products can be ordered. Good luck with your horse!:)

Thanks, Silkec. I've had a look at their website and it looks good. I'm going to give them a ring to find out if it can be given alongside the gastroguard (as he's halfway through a course) or if it's suitable for maintainance afterwards.

I've called a couple of companies and spoken to my vet and am thinking of possibly using Equine America U-guard or Naf Gastri-vet. (Has anyone used this one?) Vet said it needed to be something to coat stomach lining. He suggested possiblility of sucralfate or bismuth subsalayclate. When I've read up on them though, it seems there's a possibility of constipation with them so I'm not sure. Has anyone used either of these? There's also Glabal Herbs Acid x or apparently the Anti-suck version is the same just a bit stronger. Anyone used this? Now very confused!!

U Gard is the old name for Ulser Gard &, as I said before, I've been very impressed with it's effect on my horse.
