so as you all now know
i have brought a cob!

Chance - Just by Chance

so i am selling all my 6'3 rugs at the local tack sale on 8th Septmber

but now need to by 6'9 rugs for chance

now i know what you will all say he is a cob doesn't need heavy rugs but...

he has been in at least 100 gram fill all summer as his owners are rather precious about there horses

and the Isle of man and always colder then England, I mean come on we are open to the Irish sea all the way round!

so i am thinking of buying him some rugs

any one want to recommend me some? he has a fleece so are, for travelling home in.

never had a wide horse and he has a thick neck

i only ever brought rugs for Tbs and such of so its all new!

I wouldn't call rugging a horse in the weather we have had most of this summer being precious unless he was unwell, I would call it unfair poor horse, get him home and let him be a horse, he will soon adjust at this time of year and probably be grateful he can get the sun on his back, have a proper roll and feel the air as he moves, he will be fine given the "chance"

You will want a rug for lots of reasons and will get numerous suggestions of the best to buy but I would probably get a set up with liners so you can rug as required adding liners when he needs it.

Am shocked they have needed to rug in the weather we have been having surely it can't have been that cold, I tend to have no fill 100g a 200g and 300g but I do like a choice:)

Oy! :p The IOM is usually warmer as you don't get the intense perma frosts we get on mainland, tho the winds are often stronger!
Try Weatherbeeta, usually good on bigger chunky ones, mostly true to size and are not too pricey.
But, as said above, let him rough off a bit to start with :)

Ruggles if you need to but as others have said, he may well adapt quite well to the climate.

Mine has what appears to be a thin winter coat but after riding him bare back you become very aware that these animals generate a fabulous amount of heat walking around, but won't if a rug flattens the coat.

Just my opinion but I'm really hoping I'm trying to protect mine from Cushings and Lami as much as I can by letting his weight come down through winter by keeping him as naturally as possible. I rug him if he needs it but this last winter that meant a 200g stable rug for 10 to 15 occasional nights when he was stabled and the temperature was -5 or below. (Stabled = can't move around to keep warm)

I have a Welsh D so fair sized shoulders and his shires rugs are great and hard wearing, especially the ones with the little v type fold on the shoulders I'm describing it really badly I know!

I've found lately standard fleece rugs are bad on him and just slide all the way back for a thicker fleece/ more like a thermatex substitute I love his mark Todd deluxe fleece I think there a few versions by other manufacturers now my mum says it looks like he's wearing an old flying jacket! It looks really smart too.

I can only advise on standard rugs as anything with a neck scares him 🙄 they look so cosy especially the combos yet he will shiver if he gets rain on his neck and will look all woebegone!

I second this, get the best quality outer rug you can in a light weight and then get liners to add to it. Mine all wore 0g rambos all winter with liners and it means you can have a really top quality waterproof layer all year round without having to buy/store/clean hundreds of them.

Interestingly just seen Be Positives comment about liners, my friend who I hack out with has a liner system and raves about it, I've built up my rug collection over the last few years before liners really became popular so not ever used them. I think I'd miss rug shopping too much if I could only buy liners much more fun than clothes shopping 😂

Thanks every one :)

I am going to leave him naked to get nice and dirty, he gets the first week of zero work, meet his new friends and just being Chance.

I only really want a no fill to start with for when we get rain day and night

I would like some weight off him as he is “show condition” so other heavy will be needed

But at least now I have some recommendations on brands :)

Thank you! Will get some photos when he arrives on 2 September

what I like about the liners especially, is they fit in a washing machine really easily and dry fast. So you can clean the bit next to the horse really well, regularly, without affecting the waterproof layer :) what's not to like.
