At my previous yard I took some cats from Cats Protection League .I have now moved and the people taking over the place begged me to leave the cats .They had been with me or 3 years and were happy and settled so I agreed and told them they needed to feed them a little once a day and let CPL know they are untouchables and I felt it was best for them to stay settled.
I moved nearly 300 miles away. I have now been contacted by a friend who tells me the new owners say they have to 'earn their keep' and are not feeding them.Consequently the cats are now begging around neighbours houses and crossing the road to do so. I e-mailed CPL to ask if they could do a home visit to check on the welfare of these cats and they say that they can do nothing have no jurisdiction and can't contact the new owners the cats 'belong to them now!
I thought that these carities retained ownership of the animals they rehomed .These cats will get killed on the road ,be hungry in the winter and be chased off by the other houses .
I am really surprised.
Please don't say contact the new owners as do to reasons I won't go into I am not prepared to do this.

Might sound harsh but you are not willing to do anything (despite being that one that took them on supposedly for life) but want CPL to. Doesn't sound very fair to me.

Once you took them on they were your responsibility, and for whatever good reason you left them behind at the time (in the honest belief they would be treated well) they now need you to follow through on the agreement you made when you took them.

Don't want this to sound rude as it is not the way it is intended, but those cats are your responsibility.

I will ask the mods to delete this,
I am 300 miles away I have asked CPL to trap them and said I will have them here they say they belong to the new people so in fact they are not mine anymore and I can not have them trapped to move them here .
I have contacted neighbours I am in touch with and can't get anyone to agree to feed them I have offered to pay for the food for them .
It could take some weeks to catch them they are wild according to the neighbours the new person at the yard will not give them up intends to keep them them but refuses to feed them.

thanks prorider you are a great help !!!!!

I will get this deleted as soon as I can!!!!!!

personally i wouldnt part with any of my animals feral or not, as i feel they are my responsibility. ferals will survive hunting, but sounds like yours were not really feral if seen to be begging at neighbours houses. i would suggest if you cant go get them, that you contact one of the neighbours where they have been begging and ask them if they will feed them and allow them the use of a shed with a box and blankets, at least through the winter. however i cant see the harm in contacting the people and asking them why they seem to be not feeding them? Also a telephone call to the CPL in that area might have got you a better response. e mails can be so blunt and uncaring. Sorry but cant believe you left them in the first place.

Wrote a reply then decided not to comment will not be posting or reading anything else as not able to go back in time and change things

i have stable cats from cats protection also.

i thought, as you did, that they retained 'ownership' so would suggest you try again and give them a ring.
i took in a stray cat at home which we cared for whilst we and CPL advertised to try to found her owner. no luck - then 3 years later some one who came to do some work at my house said that she was his old cat!!! i was obviously concerned that we were about to have 'our' cat, whom we had become extremely fond of, taken away but also felt torn as if i genuinely lost a cat 3 years ago and found it again, I would hope to be able to take it home again. However we had advertised greatly in the area the cat came from and in the local vets, etc, and no one claimed her at the time. anyway to cut a long story short the CPL said i could not 'give back' the cat as not mine to give - as i had adopted her through them when we could not find her owner, she now officially belonged to them, and if i did not want her they would take her back. etc. now i know they were saying this to support me but i would be tempted to try them again.

Explain your situation and ask (beg) that someone goes and checks up on your cats.

i am sure you made what you thought was the best decision for the cats at the time. ex-feral yard cats are very diffent from house cats and i would understand if you thought it would distress them too much to move them and better to allow them to stay where they were setted as the new owners seem to be promising to do the right thing by them.

i adore my gang but also know they are very happy in their yard. if i moved i most definitely would want to take them with me, but if my new yard was less suitable and it seemed much better for them to let them stay where they were settled i would feel that i have to seriously consider what i thought would be in their best interest. it seems that unfortunately the new owner were not as genuine as they seemed and in retrospect you may, inadvertantly, have not made the best decision. :-(
but then isn't hindsight a wonderful thing!

The important thing now is to do the best you can by your cats and i would agree with ofcourseyoucan that a phone call with the CPL in that area would be a good start. i have found the CPL around here fantastic once you get through to the right people!

in case you wondering the wprkman that came to to our house and found 'what' he thought was his old cat was lovely. he could see that she was very happy and well loved with us and as he had seperated from his wife and she had given away 'our' cat's brother felt we should keep her. lucky as i would not have given her up easily!!! his daughter came round once to see that she was happy and say goodbye :-( and we have not heard from them since.

good luck.
