I switched to SupaStuds 2 weeks ago, I did a pre Nov on my youngster and all was fine. Used them today for the CCI* at Blair and we slipped and fell at the third last. When we went to remove his studs he only had 3 left (started with 8)

So annoyed that we had a fall due to bloody studs coming out as was flying round clear up until then.

Anyone else had this problem?

Yes my mares back end went and we ended up in an oxer then we went to take them out and one was stuck in the thread was totally gone and it was their first outing. To say I am not impressed is putting it mildly!

I'm so sorry to hear about your fall, I hope you are both ok. gutted for you :(

I don't use supastuds anymore as I kept losing them. I use 8 studs every time I compete and couldn't believe how many I lost when normally it takes a while and if I lose any with normal studs its just the odd one. With the supastuds I lost about 5 one time, then 3 the next. Ended up switching back.

So gutted for you though :(

No - I have used them for over a year and not had this - think I have only lost one travel one once they are in  I take it they were the genuine supastuds? Have heard there have been problems with fakes I think.

Really sorry to hear you fell - hope you and horse are okay?

I have used for over a year and never lost one so really feel for you. There are some fake supa studs about maybe speak to them they are really helpful.

They were genuine Supastuds, I bought they at Blair from a very reputable saddler.

I've got concussion and been suspended on medical grounds. head is thumping but I'll live. Horse is out in the field and will need the Physio as a little sore but he too will live.

Gutted as it was with out a doubt the best he has ever gone, we only had 3 left to jump and would have been home clear after a good DR too.

But I guess that's eventing for you ....

Sorry to hear you both had a fall, hope you are both ok.

I've used supastuds for a few years now and have only lost one that I can remember.. And no more than when I was using normal studs..

The only time I have lost SupaStuds is when I haven't put them in tight enough. If you get them in really tight they 'lock' against the shoe and I haven't lost any so far this year, apart from the one I dropped in the grass on Wednesday and didn't even know where, so unless I scoured the field with my StudStasha, I was never going to find it!

As above poster - only lost when not tight enough and not 'locked'. How gutting, I hope you and horse recover okay :)

Really sorry :( hope you both recover well tho' I know how gutted you must be!!! We used supa studs for 2 seasons and found them really good xx

OUCH! Hope the head thumping stops soon. Did you fall on the flat or on the turn?

I've used supastuds for about 4 years now and never lost one. Just make sure you tighten them up properly when you put them in.

I did have them in very tight. Trust me if you had seen Blair XC you would tighten your studs!

Darkhorse - it was both on the turn and on the flat. I decided since I was clear to not risk a run out at and since they were numbered separately to play safe. Sailed over the table at 20, shouted "Not presenting!" went behind the corner at 21 and was turning back round towards the corner when he slipped and we fell. Gutted!

I'm so sorry for you. We slipped over at skipton and its not nice at all :( ive used supastuds all this season and the slip was on a false surface in a gateway, no ones fault, it just rolled under him and he skated and slipped. Ive only done pre novice this season but I've not lost a stud yet... Id phone them up though! See what they have to say, maybe you've got a dodgy batch!

My farrier begged me not to use Supastuds. Although its a nice idea that you dont have to clean the thread out, in reality what happens is that they cut a new thread each time, and eventually the holes become 'bigger' resulting in the loss of the studs as you have discovered.

I use old fashioned ones and clean my threads out, but I dont loose studs!

I do have to say I don't use them as self threading ones. My studholes are always cleaned out and tapped with my trusty tap that I have had over 20 years. Maybe that is why I have found them okay.

Yep, I've learnt the lesson the hard way! I too over the last 20 years done the same as you and perhaps lost 3 or 4 studs in 20 years. Supastuds are in the bin.

My dad is an engineer, knows nothing about horses, but said to me last night that the break in the thread to allow the dirt to get out makes them less likely to stay in. He said anything that is 'self tapping' is much easier to put in but also easier to remove. Funny, I never thought about asking my non horsey dad about studs!

They aren't self-tapping though, they are self cleaning. They don't cut a new thread and I have had to tap old holes before my Supastuds will go in on occasion, which I would not need to do if they were self tapping.

I do this with the Supastuds too though. Never try and put them in without tapping. I have not had a problem to date but shall be watching very closely in future!! First sign that we are losing any and they will also be going in the bin!! Could not say I just use Supastuds - I have quite a large collection so mix and match as required. My bigger ones are all my old non SS studs one so I guess when ground has been really deep, like Hutton in July, they are what I picked and are when studs would be most tested.

What was ground like at Blair this year?

Exactly this. Here's a quote from the SupaStuds website;

*NOTE: SUPASTUDS ARE NOT SELF-TAPPING STUDS, THEY DO NOT RUIN THE THREAD IN YOUR STUD HOLES! THEY ARE SIMPLY DESIGNED TO CLEAN THE HOLE AS THEY SCREW IN, NOT TO RE-THREAD IT.

I've used them for around 5-6 years now and have never lost one (except when the horse loses a shoe which is really annoying ;)) and never had any problems with the stud hole getting bigger/thread being ruined.

I do, on occasions, have to use a tap but this is where the top of the stud hole has 'sheared over' on account of the amount of roadwork I do.

the only times i've lost studs were when the farrier had tapped the studs from the wrong side of the shoes (argghhhh) and they fell out. never ever had a problem with Supastuds, they are NOT self-tapping though and i always get the holes as clean as possible and then try the stud, if it doesn't go in VERY easily first time then i re-tap the hole before trying again.
gutting for that to happen though, i really feel for you, i'm still smarting about having the same thing happen at 3* yonks ago! hope you're both back to 100% very soon.

How gutting for you :( Glad to hear that you and your horse are ok - albeit a little battered and bruised.

I've never had a problem with Supastuds either. I clean and tap out studholes the night before needing to use them and never tried to 'self tap' with them, I don't think it would work anyway. I've never lost any. My OH is my stud expert - he has no interest at all in horses but is a chartered engineer so various bits of kit catch his eye. After watching me struggle with old fashioned studs he was convinced there was something better out there. He studied them at an event and then bought me some - he thinks they are an incredibly clever design.

Hope you both feel better soon.

Also never had a problem with supastuds, and use very little else now. I am the same though, I clean out my stud holes the night before, and tap them, so the supastuds just go straight in the next day :) I just find they last longer than normal studs, hence using them, and the holes don;t need to be quite so clean, which is a massive bonus!

I didn't get on with Supastuds and quickly went back to normal ones.

I cleaned and tapped properly before putting them in and they still either fell out of wouldn't go in the hole in the first place!

Definitely the real deal as bought from the Supastud stand at Weston a few years back.

Hope you are feeling better, luckily when mine decided to go walkabout we didn't have an incident.
