Hi, I was just wondering if anyone could give me some advice about barrier super plus fly repellent. I e-mailed the company to ask what all the ingredients are and they told me it contains the active ingredient citriodiol and avocado. I e-mailed back to see if they could tell me all the ingredients but they said they don't give out all the ingredients and are not required to do so (they are only required to give their active ingredient). Does anyone know if it is usual that fly repellents for horses don't list all their ingredients? I am slightly worried about this because although this is meant to be a non-toxic product suitable for organic farming systems I wonder if they are able to include such things as deet oil which I wouldn't want to use. If deet oil would be an active ingredient then it would be listed but does anyone know if deet oil (or other types of oils) are active or inactive ingredients. If anyone has fly repellent which they know uses deet oil would you mind looking for me if it is listed on the bottle as an active ingredient or inactive or not listed at all?

I have come across a product for humans called mosi-guard from www.herbal-direct.com. The active ingredient in this is also citriodiol so I was thinking of trying this instead if they are able to tell me all the ingredients. As it is a human product I am assuming that they would have to list all the ingredients. Has anyone used mosi-guard and found it to be effective?

I have heard the super plus fly repellent is very good and maybe I am overworrying because I know it is meant to be natural etc (I want a chemical free fly repellent) but I think some 'natural' ingredients are not necessarily good and don't know if deet oil or other things like this are classed as natural and therefore could be added to this product without being listed.

If anyone is able to give me their thoughts or advice I would be very grateful!

Thanks very much.

Well as its herbal you can kind of see what Barrier wouldn't want to give you the recipe!

However it does not contain DEET which is N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide and is not a naturally occurring ingredient.

Barrier is good, but I have found absorbine ultrashield more effective, but this has got permethrin in and is not natural if that is important to you

Barrier certainly contains peppermint and cloves - smells gorgeous! It is the best I have used, although now I make my own up with tea and vinegar, then add some Barrier to it. My mare is grossly allergic to citronella so I have always had to read labels very carefully.

I bought huge tub of it i dont find it very good the flys land on my horse as soon as i spray him forever going out and respraying but i must say deet is 100 times better

Sorry I can't help with what the ingredients are - but just to warn you my horse is allergic to it, more so than he is allergic to certain fly bites!
I won't use deet products on them either, I make my own, tea, citronella and tea tree oil, I can't say any product I have used has been amazing so at least if you make it yourself it's cheap and you know what's in it.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I'm not sure whether I'll try it or not or make my own up but at least I know there's no deet in it. Every year at this time I start to think again about fly repellents as I never really find anything that's great! The only thing I have found brill is the Avon SSS which I use at night for the midges but I don't put that on during the day in case it burns in the sun.
Thanks again!
