Hi All,
Im new on here and come with a questions. I have recently got a horse who came with a quarter crack. When I got him it was a ridge which opened up at the bottom. I have a great (and of course expensive) farrier who it really on top of managing it, and after lots of broken feets, lost shoes etc over the last 4 months his feet are starting to look good.
However his quarter crack is not making much progress, the ridge has now opened to a hairline crack and whilst the hole at the bottom starts lower an therefore smaller, it is very spongy inside and goes right through to the inside of his foot i.e there is a gap between his show and hoof (although tiny). This will be a haven for bacteria and so there seems little light at the end of the tunnel.
We have been scrubbing and disinfecting religiously and thought I was making head way but am concerned as we havent even started winter yet and worry the damp wet codnitions (plus we are on clay) are going to make things worse.
So, what I am asking, does any one have any other tips, or supplement ideas.
I ams ure once the bad hoof fro where he was at his previous yard has grown out, and good strong hoof is coming throughw e will be fine to manage it, it is just to get to that stage and get through the winter.
We have recently got Keratex Hoof Gel that keeps them protected from mud and bacteria for 2 days at a time and ensure he has a deep bed so he is as dry as possible (he is a pig in his stable of course).
Any way, I would really appreciate any feedback.
Thanks in advance!
