Hi All,

Im new on here and come with a questions. I have recently got a horse who came with a quarter crack. When I got him it was a ridge which opened up at the bottom. I have a great (and of course expensive) farrier who it really on top of managing it, and after lots of broken feets, lost shoes etc over the last 4 months his feet are starting to look good.

However his quarter crack is not making much progress, the ridge has now opened to a hairline crack and whilst the hole at the bottom starts lower an therefore smaller, it is very spongy inside and goes right through to the inside of his foot i.e there is a gap between his show and hoof (although tiny). This will be a haven for bacteria and so there seems little light at the end of the tunnel.

We have been scrubbing and disinfecting religiously and thought I was making head way but am concerned as we havent even started winter yet and worry the damp wet codnitions (plus we are on clay) are going to make things worse.

So, what I am asking, does any one have any other tips, or supplement ideas.

I ams ure once the bad hoof fro where he was at his previous yard has grown out, and good strong hoof is coming throughw e will be fine to manage it, it is just to get to that stage and get through the winter.

We have recently got Keratex Hoof Gel that keeps them protected from mud and bacteria for 2 days at a time and ensure he has a deep bed so he is as dry as possible (he is a pig in his stable of course).

Any way, I would really appreciate any feedback.

Thanks in advance!

Is it big enough to plug with some cotton wool soaked in stockholm tar? if so I'd do that.

As for promoting healthy hoof growth, I can recomend D&H sure foot as a supplement and either kevin bacon hoof dressing or cornucrescine hoof dressing applied daily.

I have a horse that is v similar,- his diet is all fine and my horse has a very good Farrier too- I don't believe in paying loads for foot supplements so give him the NAF biotin,he's been on it since the beginning of the year and his feet already look a lot stronger.

His feet can crack when going from dry to wet weather conditions and vice versa.

I wash his feet every day and apply a hoof dressing- the Right Step spray is very good, and on days I don't use that, I use green hoof balm. In the summer months he has a hoof cream moisturiser (Farnam Hoof Saver) -which is fab handcream as well!

If cracks appear we get them filled with vettec filler I think it's called- if you ask your Farrier he will know what it is- it really helps.

Red Horse Products do fantastic hoof care stuff. All natural and works a treat. We use their Field Paste to help prevent thrush as our horses live out all year round and it really did do the trick. They have one for plugging holes, cracks etc, can't remember the name of it though.

My TB had atrocious feet when he came to us, I have used formula4feet for the last couple of years, together with cornuscrescine applied every other day, in conjunction with effol. His feet are fantastic now but it has taken time and I daren't stop!
