Suspensory Damage

Don't panic yet! My mare who was 8 at the time was diagnosed with PSD in both hind legs, vets were very positive as it was only slight inflammation of the suspensory branches. So we used IRAP and Shockwave for 5 session 3 weeks apart, box rest with a 5 min walk every day to keep us sane. After the treatment she had 2 weeks in a field the size of her stable with a good dose of sedalin. And then reintroduced work and stuck to the rehab plan. Each check up was going really well and it wasn't until the last check up where we had introduced canter work we ultrascanned her and the PSD had flared up again.
2 days later she had the faciotomy and neurectomy, I was very skeptical of this but as the vet said, you can now affiliate with this. He also promised that I would be competing with 6 months of the operation. Shes now a really happy horse again and although we are mainly hacking and enjoying doing little RC stuff she has the potential to do more,

Box rest tips... ROUTINE!! My mare knew her daily routine and we stuck to it, so fed, watered and mucked out first thing and the radio went on along with her magnetic boots, lunch time she would get a fibre block when her best friend went out in the field. Afternoon treat ball if the yard was busy and good groom before waiting until the yard was quiet to go for our walk.
She would have high fibre cubes in her treat ball with a token feed in an evening of fibre with magnesium and joint supplement.

Have a look at the rvc lectures, they had one last year that I went to on suspensories, very interesting and certainly will give you a lot of the answers you are looking for, you can view online with a password if you call them they will give it to you. I found it so helpful and where you are being given lots of info from peoples personal and often isolated view points this will give you much more insight into the whole thing, I came away feeling like I knew exactly what needed to be done and what I shouldn't bother considering!

I've just had a look - the vet doing the lecture was Andy Fiske-Jackson, who worked on my other horse when he was undergoing lots of CT scanning and diagnoses. I have a lot of time for him, he's an excellent vet.

Hope it helped, I found it so informative and it really made me sure of the treatment path to follow and what not to bother with as you do end up with rather conflicting advice!
He is rather easy on the eye too which helped the concentration lol 😉

Ha, I didn't want to mention that part but yes he is not unpleasant to look at! It made me even more conscious of sobbing uncontrollably at his desk :D
