swamp fever in uk

[ QUOTE ]
As far as I know Romania is not an island and flying insects have no respect for boarder crossings so why has swamp fever not spread throughout Europe and not rife in other european countries?

If it is mainly in Romania only then perhaps it might be worth looking at how countries nearer to Romania manage to contain it.

Italy is endemic. It exists in Spain and is not unknown in France.
Italy does not insist on the slaughter of positive equines but insists on total isolation from any other equine by something like 500 metres (?). Total isolation means just that-the horse involved is condemned to live on his own for the rest of his days(if he doesnt die quickly) with no contact whatsoever with any type of equine. Better off slaughtered if you ask me

Yes. All comfirmed cases, either affected or carriers, will be compulsory destroyed.

There is no compensation....well Tankey says £1 per equine. Woopy doo eh? I assume our insurance policies will not cover us for notifiable diseases too.

So if it is in other european countries like Italy I am presuming that Italian horses than come to the UK to compete or UK horses who go to Italy to compete are all tested for EIA to prevent it coming in that way?

If not then I presume it would only be a matter of time before before it came to the UK via Italy.

I might give NFU a call and see where they stand on it...

I would be interested to what they have to say as I'm with them. I am horrified about the whole situation

Why was the F. Rescue topic banned from discussion on here? I don't understand? Surely things like this need to be pulicized? xx

because we think we are right, they think they are right and it always ran into threads pages longs with real names being used etc and h and h lawyers said it was beginning to have legal implications for IPC

Not necessarily: in North America, there are some isolation yards containing only carriers of EIA. The yards would be well away from others, and transport is restricted. However, since the horses on the yard are otherwise healthy, they can have quite normal lives. I've heard of one yeard that functions as a riding school, for example.

It can also be transferred by crab flies, so that puts the New Forest hugely at risk if any infected horse rolls up there.
The crab flies, unlike the other biting insects, travels on the horse. This was one of the points raised in the many threads that were pulled.
We know for fact that several of the horses imported via Franch arrived with lots of these flies on them. Imagine the capability for transferring disease on a long haul journey.

When I brought my homebred boy over to Italy (from the UK) he had to have a Coggins certificate to enter the country. This was 18 years ago.
I was instrumental in selling a horse to England from Italy 2 years ago-he had to have a Coggins certificate to enter GB as he had lived in Italy.Had he been sold from France he would not have needed said certificate
