I have a new pony and he's great- we are having lots of fun, he's not done much before so therefore hasn't traveled a lot, but now loads perfectly and is happy in trailer at a stand still and in motion but he sweats like bilio!

We have a been hunting 3 times and a lesson too, and like i said is loading brilliantly now (after 1st few times was slightly reluctant). But the sweat is unreal in that freezing weather my Mum was following a short 7 mile trip and she said it was like following a mobile steam room, and Saturday the meet was 3 miles away (5-10 minute steady drive) and he was drenched.

I tried a magic calmer just to see but no effect and wondered if anyone had any suggestions?

Any help greatly received :)

As above but he also sounds like a nervous traveller. My youngster did the same so I travelled in boots on the front and bandages on his back legs, and I still travel him very lightly rugged even though he is heavily rugged normally.

Thin micro fleece with no neck- going to buy a fine mesh one- to see if that helps he's un-clipped but hardly has any coat anyway. The front windows (510) are slid open a bit for ventilation.

He doesn't like the boots or bandages being taken off so as we've been doing really short local traveling and he stand so nicely in trailer i've left them off for now and he travels better without them (we picked him up in boots and he was drenched). It's a constant trial to see how we can make him happier.

He's not seemingly stressed, doesn't stomp around in trailer (i can see through the windows and usually my mum follows behind to see what he's up to and he's just eating his hay), he's is in no great rush to get out when we get there and follows me up ramp like a relaxed pup to and from.

Does he have enough room? If he is in a confined space he may have to be working very hard to keep his balance.

Try travelling him with no partitions (if trailer) or double partition (if horsebox) and see if he is calmer. If you can see you will then be able to see how he naturally arranges himself and can then find how to travel.

If that is the problem - and it is with more horses than you think, then it is like magic when you give them enough room. Some horses just need lots and lots of room, especially at the back, and can panic if there isn't enough room for them.

My mare gets really hot when travelling. She's a good traveller and fully clipped but unless it's a very short journey I usually have to leave her naked to travel  With her I think it's a combination of the effort they have to make to stand up (don't they say time spent travelling is equivalent to the same time spent walking?) and excitement as she loves going places. Maybe he's getting overexcited if he hasn't been out and about much before you got him?

Reg sweats like anything unless he's with another horse who travels well. He turns the lorry into a sauna, and in one memorable journey sweated so hard the glue that held the carpet to the walls dissolved and all the carpet fell on him. He now travels naked (then washed and rugged on arrival if there's a wait, or tack chucked on), and we just let him be with it. He actually travels well if you ignore the sweating.

I poated a similar thread have since gad syccess with nupafeed syringes i know people say theyll fet ised to travelling...doesnt mean u dont want it to be a good experience for them until they r used to it. first time i used it i was amazed he just had a wee bit of sweat and the second not a bit

No rug needed as not clipped!

Horses create 500 watts of heat when travelling. It is BOILING outside at the moment! There is no snow no frost just blinking rain. Far far too mild.

And only going 7 miles up the road as well I would doubt there would be any airflow generated in the trailer as well.

good luck

He does only have a fluffy style summer coat and does feel the cold- the 7 mile trip was -4 too .

But like I say I'm trying something different each time we travel to try and make him more comfy- so will try Tuesday without a rug as an 'A road' 7 miles so relatively quick.

He's only 15hh in a Ifor 510 so does have room but I do also have the double breast bar which I used with my last horse who appreciated the space so can try that too, but hoping to be taking daughters pony too soon when I'm confident that my boy has settled into it.

Thank you for your advise- happy that I'm having the same ideas that have been suggested here :)

This is him last week- you can see there is not your 'usual' cob winter coat
