Hi
I took my horse hunting yesterday and thought for his comfort I would treat him to a sheepskin numnah. I'm not sure if this has caused the problem or not but he's been left with 2 sweaty patches, where the seat of the saddle touches his back. They are still wet today (the following day), obviously he's not sweating anywhere else.
He's very sensitive to touch on the patches, although none of the hair has been rubbed away, and it doesnt look sore as in red raw. And there are no lumps or bumps, swelling etc
Anyone any ideas, I've never seen anything like this before

is it hot?
Pidge had sweat rash at the end of the summer, had to have steroid jab, norodine for 7 days and lots and lots of antihistamine.
If I were you I'd call your vet as if its the same as what Pidge had its very very sore for the horse

Sounds like muscle damage due to prolonged pressure. If the saddle does not spread your weight over a large enough area ,you restrict blood flow to the loaded areas . A sheepskin does not have much ,if any, effect in reducing this.

In the middle of the saddle?

You don't happen to have a wintec do you? The tree is often too curved and rocks back and forth, pivoting in the middle and making them sore their. Other tree's too curved for the horses back will also do that.

Morning CC - lovely to see you. Hear you had a bit of a boring day on the roads :0(

I wonder if there was simply too much pressure underneath the saddle? And so he has pressure sores??

Maybe worth a course of bute to take some of the sting out of it......(?)

Sounds like the saddle has made him sore - his muscles are not used to carrying you for as long as a day's hunting and your saddle must not be sitting quite right on his back. Sounds like you need one which disperses your weight a little better!

To sweat like that, it must be sore

if your saddle is fitted to a cotton numnah then a sheepskin one may alter the fit enough to cause pressure points... and if it is moving a bit due to changed fit then sheepskin is a bugger for bunching up....

i know the theory is that sheepskin is better for a full day in the saddle but to be honest i went out hunting for 5hrs on my mare on sat with just a cotton numnah (what her saddle is fitted to) and even though i normally only ride for 1hr ish a day her back was fine in it - and this is the mare who'll chuck me off if she so even feels a hint of discomfort across her back due to previously bad fitting saddles

Thanks everyone. I'm glad to report the sweaty patches have gone. And he's not half so sore. I bathed the area this morning and there is no noticeable damage to the skin. The saddle isnt a wintec but i did have one of those foam saddle shaped wintec shock absorber things on as well as sheepskn. Will stick to cotton in future as he does have sensitive skin

Hi B
All completely normal this morning, no flinching or soreness

Re the hunting, actually, in the end we got onto the field and had a great time, did some good fences, ditches and water with some longish gallops

How are you anyway?
