swelling oozing - any suggestions?

Hi. I have had a read of your post over that last few days. It sounds like your horse has massive ventral oedema rather than any abcess and you mention that her back legs are swollen too. This coupled with the fact that she has been colicing on and off since last thurday plus rapid weight loss is indicative of something rather more serious. If she was my horse, I would get the vet out pronto to do some bloods. It would appear from your posts that the vet has visited once, for the initial bout of colic, but not since. I apologise if that is incorrect, but that is how I have read it.

Forget the cost, get the vet out to see what the problem is, the vet precribing antibiotics over the phone and giving the advice to feed more is not the answer, the cause needs to be found before you end up with a very sick horse.

I have 'Keeping up with the Kardashians' on the tv which is enough to drive anyone to insanity, the forum is a much needed escape from that cr@p!

The vet has been out twice, on sunday i had another vet out so thats 3 visits 2 different vets (at the same time) one a very experienced equine vet. They both agreed it was indeed a bruise as its very painful and as i discovered on thursday morning she had trampled down the electric fencing and must have got caught on top of one of the posts

her back legs are up slightly because she has been standing in a stable 24/7 since thursday due to ice and the wound leaking is due to fluid build up from the bruising which (not an abcess), as i quote the vet, is very normal and healthy and what dosent get absorbed will come out due to where the swelling is - the swelling has gone down lots and shes back to her happy self. She is a poor doer and being colicky for 3 days plus not eating has probably taken it out of her and its not unusual for a horse to lose condition after being ill.

Millyspaniel, not read all of the posts as some of them seem rather unpleasent. You have my sympathy, I just forked out £180 for two sets of teeth to be done (one sedated) and Penny's eyes to be looked at. Then last night I realised that Penny's tetanus jab was due on the 15th December, and thought I would have to restart. Thankfully the vet used their discresion and thought it would be ok to give her the jab asap without having to restart. I also had Misty and Saf done as they were due in January - cost £108. So nearly £300 in a few weeks just before Christmas. I'm still reeling a bit as thankfully my girls never seem to give me any trouble (touch wood).

For £50.00 the OP could get the Knackerman out.

When did you last get a knackerman out? It costs around £200 to have a horse shot at home and removed from the premises. If you have it put to sleep by a vet that's about £150 and then another £200 on top to have the body removed and incinerated.

I think you are a bit out of date, or not in England maybe, where EU regulation has put the cost of removing any dead livestock through the roof.

Millyspaniel will you please let us know on another thread how your horse is getting on? I am sorry to have added all this upset to this thread when you are having enough problems right now.

I hope the antibiotics did their stuff and she is doing well. I'm glad you found a reason for the injury, because that's much easier to deal with than some phantom abscess that came out of nowhere and the worry that it could happen again any time.
