My friend called me yesterday, after checking on my 20 yo gelding telling me that he had a lump;
She said that it is under his chin, near where it joins onto his neck. She said it is a soft golf ball shape. She said that you cannot really see it, but you can feel it.
It is not hurting him or bothering him in any way.
Other people down the yard have looked at it, and they think it could be swollen glands.

He is fine in himself, still eating and drinking, and sound in every way, still riding lovely.

He has recently been turned out on summer grazing 24/7.

Do you know what this could be? Can horses get swollen glands? Thanks.

Ours has this, vet came out and said it's Derbyshire neck, people gat it. It's a lack of Iodide it's bascally a lack of salt. We gave him a salt lick and it whent down a lot. But it could be something else.

It could be that he has just been turned out on rich grass which causes their saliva glands to swell.

My boy had this a couple of weeks ago after being turned out 24/7 on grass that had just sprung up. It wasn't anything to worry about but you may wish to give your vet a phone cos it's not usual for it to be one lump underneath his jaw. They come up on both sides.

I've had mine's saliva glands swell up HUGE when he was on new grass (he moved to a new area). They usaully go up both sides, but can be more one side than the other. It can be quite scary to look at, but they should go down after an hour or so of being brought in...if this 'lump' shows different characteristics though it could be something else, could you try bringing him off grass for a day to see if it changes or goes down?

This is the same with my mare. In fact last time we moved fields, one of hers came up so big the swelling was almost over her cheek  fortunately it went down pretty quick.

Has you changed fields or is he just turned out more now?

Well, my friend called me last night, i havent actually seen it yet, so there could be another lump on the other side, i am going to go and have a look after i have finished work.

He has just swapped fields and has been turned out 24/7, so maybe this is causing it??...

Ditto the saliva glands, one of mine gets it. Panicked rather when I first noticed it as never had them before on any other horses. They are not defined lumps though, but swellings if that makes sense.

hhmmm...Maybe this is what it is then.
What would you do if you were me, do you think i ought to bring him off the grass for a few days, and seeing how he gets on, or should i call the vet ASAP?
Is there anyway that i would know if it is the saliva glands?
Thanks,

My boy gets the swellings both sides, and looks a bit hamster like. Thats pobably not a very good description is it? They are kind of behind his cheek bone jowly bit - near to where you would do the headcollar up. He gets them every now and then and I ignore them and they go away! They are not painful.

If the swelling is painful I would maybe call the vet though.

both my horses come in with swollen glands each night but on both sides. Ive never had it on one side only.
Check him later if it is the one side i would just ring vet to ask them better to be safe than sorry.

Sounds like grass glands. Mine gets them on days when there's been a spurt in growth. He comes in at night and they've gone by the morning. Some days it's just a bit of swelling under the jaw, other days he looks like a chipmunk! Have you tried bringing him in overnight to see if they disappear? If not then get the vet in.

No i havent tied keeping him in yet, my frield only noticed it late last night when she went to check on them all.
I think i am going to keep him in tonight and see how he is in the morning.

this is what my horse gets, when his are big he strugles to go in an outline so i bring him in overnight with a haynet on the sand paddocks and there gone down by the morning, i find he gets it when the grass is shorter!

Hi, i had this exact problem in January, notice one day that my horse had a golf ball, small egg shapped swelling under his head where neck attaches! it was moveable and didnt hurt him in anyway. Anyway called vet very worried and she examined him and said it was his thyroid, they drop sometimes as the connective tissue holding them up there just 'snaps'- absolutely fine and very common. dont think its grass glands as they are more like sausage shapped swellings not golf balls! hope this helps!

I am glad other people have this problem too! When both my horses go into our top field they both come in with massive swollen glands - they have gone down after a couple of hours and dont seem to affect them! When they are in the bottom field they dont get it...both paddocks have short grass so I have always thought they must be eating something funny or something in the land on the top field that effects them.

It has been happening for years and our vet told me not to worry - so I havent worried LOL
