Hi guys, you may remember my post earlier in the year with my horse going barefoot, but being on box rest and getting a swollen sheath. With full turn out at the end of August his sheath issue resolved itself.

However he was brought in at night in the second week of November and I have now noticed a hard swelling on the side of his sheath again, afaik judging by his stable he s still weeing normally. He's never had this before and has been on the same regime on the same grass with the same hay supplier for the last nine years. Our hay this year is very good, so do you think it's possibly high protein hay causing the swelling? Hard feed wise he gets fast fibre, speedibeet and micronised linseed. I soaked his hay today (well tipped two buckets of water over it this morning when I put it in the hay bar for this evening) I just wanted to ask for opinions :)

Hi hun, my freinds horse had a sheath infection which became swollen, maybe worth getting a check by the vet!! when did you last clean the sheath?? mabe a very little hibi scrub diluted in lots warm water , good clean sponge and if he will let you get your hand right up there and give it a very good clean!! some geldings will kick when you do this so be very careful!! also the swelling may reduce with exerise!! but really worth a vets call out that way he can have a full clean and see whats happening up there!! xx
