Hiya, have noticed my guy seemed to be slightly wheezy since we've picked up faster work in the last couple weeks (we were sticking to walk for the two months prior). He's a Welsh D, no previous issues known but I've only had him and known him since October last year. He passed a 5 stage vetting in May last year with nothing picked up. He is fat! I am trying to get his weight down but it's difficult with the fact he shares a field (doesn't cope alone) and we're only just picking up the faster work. I decided to try popping him on Synovium Airplus liquid after reading great reviews on how it helped others with respiratory issues. He has been on it a week now, just 30mls once a day, and today he has had a big coughing fit about 5-10 minutes into our ride. He snorted a couple times after and then no more coughing. Did walk trot and canter work with no further coughing. Still sounding a bit wheezy after faster work (recovers quickly). Any ideas on what to do? Should I keep him on the synovium? Is it just doing its job and loosening stuff off and that's what's causing him to cough now? Or should I scrap it? Feeling so confused. Only dealing I've had with respiratory issues before is wheny last girl ended up with terrible breathing on boxrest and was given ventipulmin, but he's nowhere near that level

I think it's impossible to say without knowing the cause unfortunately. I don't know the supplement but that he's getting worse on it suggests it's not actually doing much. I'd say your next step should be a vet visit.

This is what I was worried about. Will have to give the vet a call and see what they say. Concerned that I've ended up with a horse with a chronic issue that's just never been noticed before as he's never been in work. Anyone have experience with what the diagnostics would be for something like this? Breathes fine at rest, hasn't had a cough until this fit today. No snot. Copes totally fine with long hacks at lower speeds with bursts of trot/canter. Lives out, with a lot of farmland surrounding. Was lots of rapeseed about until the flowers died off a week or two ago.

My sec d X cob has been quite wheezy and coughing this spring. There's been a lot of pollen about and now the grass pollen has started.

Our new last year companion pony came to us very wheezy. I put her on NAF Respirator and her lungs have cleared considerably and we dont hear coughing any more and the tucked up drawn in look has gone.

Could be pollen, allergy to something in your stable or barn or hay etc…bedding…best check with the vet x

Okay so vet has been out and she's thinks there's nothing serious going on. Shes happy it's just during faster work that he's doing it and reckons it's not a real problem, likely just due to it being so dry and dusty, possibly pollen related as we are surrounded by crops and trees. Had a good listen to his lungs and said they sound good. Showed her a video I managed to get of him having a cough after a canter but she's not concerned. She suggested trying a respiratory supplement, something containing menthol possibly, to try open the airways a bit better. Anyone have suggestions on what works best for them that's cost effective?

Oh also she said to call her back out if he develops issues at rest, but there's been no problems there so far (touch wood!). He doesn't have a consistent heave line, appears at times when working but have been told that might be his abdominals just working as we are working on him carrying himself properly and working over his back. Never seen a heave line at rest

We had very good results with a seasonal/allergy cough with basalmic control after I saw it recommended on here. Last year involved a lot of steroids and ventipulmin and time off, this year he just had the supplement and no time off required.

Thank you! I've seen the balsamic air stuff recommended but not heard balsamic control, will have a look!

Ah it might have been the air we used, I had to google as couldn’t remember the name.

I was surprised given the ingredients but if it worked it worked, he only had it for a month and he’s currently fine atm (outside of his allergic time).

Looks like the balsamic air is a liquid and balsamic control is like pelleted balancer style?
